The carriage, which holds the ink cartridges, stalls in the printer, and a carriage jam error message displays on the control panel. A paper jam might have occurred previously.
You might also experience the following symptoms:
  • The printer does not print.
  • The print job stops unexpectedly.
note:
If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), your printer might not look exactly like the printer in the images, but the steps are the same.

Video overview

This video shows how to clear a carriage jam on the HP OfficeJet 4650 printer.

Step 1: Clear jammed paper from the printer

There are different areas where jammed paper might become blocked. Clear any jammed paper from one area, then try to print again. If the error persists, check the next area for any jammed paper.
note:
You need a flashlight to complete these steps.
If you have checked and removed any jammed paper from each printer area and the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges

Improper placement or installation of the ink cartridges might cause the printer to indicate a carriage jam error. To make sure the ink cartridges are installed correctly, remove and reinstall the ink cartridges, then try to print again.
  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not on already.
  2. Gently grasp the handles on either side of the printer, then raise the ink cartridge access door until it locks into place.
The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  7. Remove the protective tape from the contacts, if necessary.
      caution:
Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.

Step 4: Reset the printer

Resetting the printer can clear carriage jam errors.
  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
    note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  5. Turn the printer on.
Try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step to service the printer.

Step 5: Service the printer
