HP Printers - Using the HP Scan and Capture App (Windows 10, 8)

This document is for HP multifunction printers and computers with Windows 10 and Windows 8.

Use the HP Scan and Capture app to scan photos or documents from your printer or computer camera.

note:
You must have the HP printing software installed on the computer to use this app. For more information, go to How do I download and install the HP printer software? in the FAQ section of this document.

Turn on the printer, load plain paper in the input tray, then confirm ink or toner cartridges are installed.
Place the item you want to scan on the scanner glass or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF), if your printer has one.
On your computer, go to HP Scan and Capture (in English) to install the app from the Microsoft Store.
After the app installs, click Launch.
Click the menu icon, then select Settings.
Click Select Device, then select your HP printer.
Click Document Scan Options or Photo Scan Options to change any settings, then click the back arrow.
Click outside the Settings menu, then click Capture Documents or Capture Photos.
When the scan completes, click the save icon.

The Save As window opens to save the item to a folder.

How do I download and install the HP printer software?

To use the HP Scan and Capture app, install HP print and scan drivers on your computer.

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to 123.hp.com.
If necessary, select your model number from the menu, click Begin, then click Download.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection setup and driver installation.
- If HP Easy Start finds multiple printers, select the printer you want to install, and then continue with the on-screen instructions.
- If HP Easy Start does not find your printer, follow the on-screen instructions to connect your printer to the network.
  
  If the installer still does not find your printer, go to Printer Not Found During Network Driver Setup (Windows) for detailed troubleshooting steps.
Return to the 123.hp.com page in your web browser to complete the printer registration and activation.

What if the scan fails or the printer is unavailable or offline?

If your printer does not display in the list of available devices or shows as offline, make sure your printer is supported and the HP software is installed, then troubleshoot connection issues if necessary.

Go to HP Scan and Capture App - Compatible Printers to make sure your printer works with this app.
Search Windows for your printer model name, then click your printer in the list of results.
- If HP Printer Assistant opens, the printer software is installed.
- If HP Printer Assistant does not open, the printer software is not installed. You must install it before you can use the HP Scan and Capture app.

If you are certain the printer is supported and the software is installed, troubleshoot possible connection issues between the printer and the computer.

Wireless connection

Check the status of the wireless network your printer and computer connect to.

Mouse over the network icon in the notification area on the desktop and make sure the computer is connected with an active Internet connection to the same network as the printer.
- If the network shown is not the same as the printer (for instance, if you connected to a neighbor's or guest network), you must connect to the same network as the printer before using the HP Scan and Capture app.
- If the network signal strength is weak, move the computer and printer closer to the router, position the devices away from large metal objects such as bookcases, and move away from devices that emit radio signals such as microwaves and cordless phones.
- If the network status is not connected, confirm that your network is working correctly, and then check the status again. Make sure a check mark displays next to the network name.
Make sure the printer wireless feature is on and the printer is connected to the same wireless network as the computer.

Some printers have a wireless icon and a blue light on the front of the printer. Make sure the light is on and not blinking.

Wired (Ethernet) connection

Make sure the wired (Ethernet) network is working properly.

Check the Ethernet cable between your computer and your router or modem to make sure it is securely connected.
Mouse over the wired (Ethernet) icon in the notification area on the desktop and make sure the computer is connected to the same network as the printer. If the wired network shown is not the same as the printer (for instance, if you are connected to another local network), you must connect to the same network as the printer before continuing.
Check the printer Ethernet cable and the lights on the printer Ethernet port. The green link light should be steady and the orange activity light should blink when the cable is connected.

How do I capture images or documents with the computer's camera?

Capture, edit, and save documents or photos using the camera on your computer or tablet.

In the search box on the taskbar, search for and open HP Scan and Capture.
Click the menu icon, then select Settings.
Click Select Device, then click Camera.
Click Document Scan Options or Photo Scan Options to change any settings, then click the back arrow.
Click outside the Settings menu, then click Capture Documents or Capture Photos.

The camera activates.
Click the Camera icon to capture the image.

The app opens the image in the editing window.
Edit the item, if desired, then click Done or Cancel X.
Click the Save icon.

The Save As window opens with options to choose the file type and folder to save the scan in.
