HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

This document is for HP printers and the HP Smart app for Windows 10 computers.
The HP Smart app includes tools to print, scan, check ink levels, and set up your printer on a wireless network.

Step 1: Install the HP Smart app

Install the HP Smart app, and then add your printer.
  1. On your Windows 10 device, go to HP Smart (in English) to get the app from the Windows Store, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the app.
    The app searches for printers connected to the network.
  2. Add the printer to your network.
    • If you have one printer connected to the network, the app automatically selects your printer. If you have more than one printer on the network, click the printer icon , click Select a Different Printer, and then select your printer from the list.

    • If you are setting up a new printer on the network, click the plus sign , click Set up a new printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. If you have more than one printer on the network and want to set up a new printer, click the plus sign , click Add printer not listed, click Set up a new printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Step 2: Print or scan documents and photos

On the HP Smart app home screen, click a tile to print or scan an item from your printer, or scan images with your Windows 10 device's camera.

Step 3: Manage printer preferences, messages, and supplies

From the home screen, click your printer to view the printer status, print reports, order supplies, change printer preferences, and access your HP Instant Ink dashboard.
Printer information, reports, and tools vary by printer.
  • View printer status: Confirm your printer is ready for use. A yellow caution triangle displays when the printer needs attention. You can also get printer information such as the printer's IP address, installation status, and network status.
  • Check ink or toner levels and order supplies: Click Supported Cartridges to view the estimated ink or toner cartridge levels, and then click the Order Supplies button to order replacement ink or toner cartridges.
  • Access the HP Instant Ink dashboard: Click HP Instant Ink to open your HP Instant Ink dashboard, or enroll your printer in HP Instant Ink.
  • Print reports and access tools: Click Printer Reports to print reports such as a Printer Status Report, Network Configuration Page, or Print Quality Report. Click Printer Quality Tools to perform maintenance actions on the printer.
  • View a list of print jobs: Click See What's Printing to view recent print jobs.
    Not all printer models support this feature.
  • Change printer preferences: Set up Scan to Email or Scan to network folder, run the Fax Setup Wizard, or change the connection type from USB to wireless.

  • Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS): Click Printer Home Page to open the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Step 4: Learn about additional features and resources

From the HP Smart app home screen, explore additional features of the HP Smart app and access support resources from HP.
Some features might not be available for your printer.
  • Print Anywhere: Use your mobile device to send print jobs over the Internet when you are away from your printer. Available on select HP printers. Go to Print Anywhere with the HP Smart App for more information.
  • Smart Tasks: Create shortcuts for printing, emailing, or saving files from the HP Smart app. Go to Using Smart Tasks for more information.
  • Resources: Find printing, scanning, and support resources including the HP JetAdvantage Capture app, the traditional desktop HP software for your printer, a universal fax driver, and an automated tool to quickly diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems.
  • Settings: Get further support and help resources including help for the HP Smart app, options to display promotions and services, a link to the privacy statement webpage, and more.
