HP Printers - Windows 10 Built-in Driver Failed to Install

This document is for HP printers and computers with Windows 10.
When you connect the printer to your computer wirelessly, with a USB cable, or an Ethernet cable, Windows 10 does not automatically install the built-in printer driver.

This video shows the steps to follow if the built-in driver failed to install in Windows 10

Step 1: Remove the printer from Devices and Printers

Remove any icons for your printer from the Devices and Printers folder.
  1. If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  2. Turn the printer off and on again, and make sure that it is in a ready state.
  3. Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
  4. Right-click the printer icon () for your printer, and then click Remove Device. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
  5. If multiple icons exist for the printer, remove them all.

Step 2: Connect your printer to the computer

Before installing the built-in driver, connect the printer to the computer or to your wired or wireless network. Refer to the section that matches your connection type for steps to connect the printer.

Step 3: Set Windows Update to automatically download driver software

Open Windows Device Installation Settings and confirm that your computer is set to automatically download driver software.
  1. In Windows, search for and open Change device installation settings.
  2. In the Device Installation Settings window, select the Yes option, and then click Save Changes.

Step 4: Install the printer driver with the Add Printer wizard

Use the Add Printer tool in Windows to install the built-in driver.
If you already connected the printer to the computer with a USB cable and you can print, the driver installed. If you are having issues printing, continue with the following steps.
  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.
  2. Click Devices and Printers, and then click Add a printer.
    Clicking Add a printer
  3. On the Choose a device or printer to add to this PC window, select your printer, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver. If your printer is not in the list, continue with these steps.

  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the port to be used by your printer, such as USB001 for a USB connected printer, and then click Next.
  7. Click Windows Update, and then wait for the print drivers to update.
  8. Click HP, Hewlett-Packard, or Hewlett Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.
    • If your printer is in the list, select it, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
    • If your printer is not in the list, click the back arrow in the upper left corner of the window two times to return to the Find a printer by other options step, and then continue with these steps.
