HP PCs - Using Cortana Personal Digital Assistant (Windows 10)

This document applies to HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10.
  note:
Cortana is not available in all regions and languages. Visit Microsoft's website to see Cortana's regions and languages.
Cortana personal digital assistant can help you perform a variety of tasks. For example, Cortana can:
  • Add appointments to your calendar
  • Remind you of appointments
  • Perform calculations
  • Search the web
In addition, Cortana can provide the following types of current and relevant information:
  • Headline news items and local weather information
  • Directions and a map to your favorite places
  • Traffic conditions to help with your commute
  • Scores for your favorite sports teams
  • Stock market gains and losses
Use the instructions in this document to set up Cortana, use Cortana's Notebook to personalize the information that Cortana uses, and manage Cortana's settings.

To use Cortana features, your computer must be connected to the Internet.
Setting up Cortana for the first time
Before the Cortana digital assistant is ready to use, Microsoft requests permission to collect your personal information. Next, Cortana requests your name and gives you the opportunity to teach Cortana how to say your name.

Speech recognition is not available in all languages.
Speech recognition does not work with all computers. For recommendations about what to do if this feature does not work with your computer, see What if the Cortana setup fails? in this document.
Use the following steps to set up Cortana for the first time.
  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
  2. To open Cortana, click the Ask me anything box, also called the search box.

  3. If a Here are some of the things I can do for you window opens, scroll through list to see the types of tasks Cortana can help perform, then click Next.
  4. To give Microsoft permission to collect and use your personal data, click I agree in the Before we get started, I'll need some info window.
      note:
    If you do not want to set up Cortana, click No thanks.

  5. Type your name or nickname in the name box, then click Next.
      note:
    If you do not want to give Cortana your name, click Skip.

  6. If you want Cortana to be able to say your name, click Hear how I'll say it.

    Cortana says your name.
    If Cortana says your name correctly, click Sounds Good.

    If Cortana says your name incorrectly, click That's Wrong.
    If you click That's Wrong, a message displays asking you to tap the microphone and say your name again. Click the microphone icon (), and say your name the way you want it pronounced. Repeat this until Cortana says it correctly, then click This one.
    When your name is entered correctly, a Great, thanks Sam! greeting appears. Click Done.

    If you are using an external microphone or speakers, make sure they are properly connected to your computer.
      note:
    To initiate a voice command, click the microphone icon ( ) in the search box, or you can type search words into the search box.
Enabling the Hey Cortana feature
You can teach Cortana to recognize your voice and activate Cortana by saying Hey Cortana. This hands-free feature allows you to use voice commands to tell Cortana what you want. For example, you can say Hey Cortana, wake me up at 6 AM.

  1. Make sure that Cortana is set up. For more information, see Setting up Cortana for the first time in this document.
  2. To enable the Hey Cortana feature, click the search box to open Cortana's Home page.

  3. Click the Notebook icon () in the left-hand column, then click the Settings icon ().
  4. In the Hey Cortana section, click On.

  5. In the Respond best: section, click Learn my voice.

  6. In the message window asking you to repeat six phrases, click Start.

    Cortana displays the six phrases one-by-one. Repeat each phrase as it displays. When the phrases are complete, Cortana sends a You're all set! message.
    Now you are ready to ask Cortana to perform a task – hands free.
Using Cortana to find Windows help
Cortana can help you quickly find Windows help. For example, you can ask for Windows help by saying or typing search questions such as How do I change text size, Where is the Control Panel, or What is my IP address. You can also find Windows files and apps by saying or typing the file or app name.
Use the following steps to get Windows help.
  1. Type your question in the search box. For example, type where is the device manager.

  2. Click Device Manager to open Device Manager.
Use the following steps to open a Windows file or app.
  1. Type the file or app name in the search box. For example, if you want to open the Music app, type open music in the search box.

  2. Click Groove Music to open the app.
Using Cortana's Notebook
Use Cortana's Notebook to keep Cortana informed about your personal interests. Some of these interests are turned on by default. You can add more interests, turn interests off, or remove them. Cortana offers several interest categories that you can customize to your needs:
  • Eat and Drink: Get recommendations for places to eat and drink
  • Local Events: Get suggestions for local events
  • Finance: Track stock market gains and losses
  • Getting around: Get traffic, time, and route suggestions
  • Movies and TV: See show times and trailers for movies and TV shows that interest you
  • Music: Get recommendations for popular tracks and albums
  • News: Get the latest headlines and stories on topics that interest you
  • Sports: Get information about your favorites sports teams
  • Travel: Get up-to-date flight status and other travel details
  • Weather: Get conditions, forecasts, and alerts for any city you choose
Use the following steps to customize the contents of Cortana's Notebook to your interests.
  1. To open Cortana's Notebook, click the search box.

Adding Favorite places
Use Cortana's Favorite places feature to store the locations of your favorite places. Cortana uses this information to provide directions for getting to your destination quickly. Use the following steps to add your Favorite places to Cortana's Notebook.
  1. To open Cortana's Notebook, click the search box.

  2. Click the Notebook icon (), then select About Me.

  3. Click Edit favorites.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Type the name of your favorite place in the Add a favorite box. For example, if you want to add your favorite restaurant, type the restaurant name, then select the restaurant from the search results.

  6. If you want to give your favorite place a nickname, type the name in the Nickname box, then click Save.

Adding Reminders
Use the following steps to add a reminder to Cortana.
  1. To open Cortana's Notebook, click the Cortana tile on the Start screen, or click the search box.
  2. Click the Reminders icon (), then click the Add icon () to add a reminder.

  3. Complete the information in the boxes, depending on the reminder. For example, if you want to be reminded to attend soccer practice every Thursday at 4:00 p.m., you would follow these steps:
    1. Type Soccer practice in the Remember to ... box.
    2. Click the Time box, scroll to 4:00 PM, then click the check mark symbol.

    3. In the Remind you about this? window, click the Only once box to expand the contents, then select Every Thursday.

    4. In the Remind you about this? window, make sure the settings are correct and click Remind.

    5. To view your reminders, click the Reminders icon ().

Changing the name Cortana uses for you
Use the following steps to change the name Cortana uses for you.
  1. To open Cortana's Notebook, click the search box.

  2. Click the Notebook icon (), then select About Me.

  3. Click the Change my name box.

  4. Type your name in the box, then click Enter.
  5. To hear how Cortana pronounces your name, click Hear how I'll say it.
    Cortana says your name.
    If Cortana says your name correctly, click Sounds Good.
    When your name is entered correctly, a Great, thanks Sam! greeting appears. Click Done.
Changing Cortana's settings
Use Cortana's settings to change your name, teach Cortana your voice, change your privacy settings, and other settings.
Use the following steps to change Cortana's settings.
  1. To open Settings, click the search box.

Using Cortana in Microsoft Edge
When you perform a search in the Microsoft Edge address bar, Microsoft Edge uses personalized information that you have provided to Cortana to make your search results more relevant to you. For example, if you type local weather in the address bar, the search results show weather information for your location.

In addition, Cortana's Ask Cortana feature is integrated into Microsoft Edge. For example, if you find a topic that you would like to know more about, you can highlight the word or phrase, right-click it, then click Ask Cortana.
