Using and launching Microsoft Fix It

This document applies to HP computers running Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP.
This document describes how to use the Microsoft Fix It application to update, diagnose and repair computers with Windows operating systems.
Diagnose and repair problems with files, folders and performance. Adjust security settings. Check Windows Update and antivirus software status. Automatically repair Windows Media Player problems.

Before you begin

Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

Using Microsoft Fix it

Diagnose, repair and update your computer with the Microsoft Fix It application by following these steps:
  1. Browse to the Microsoft Fix It Solution Center to begin diagnosing and repairing computer problems.

  2. In the Select a problem area section click a button to choose your topic.
    note:
    Some of the buttons have subsets which allow you choose a more specific area. Hover over a button. If there are subsets, they will appear so that you can select a sub-topic.

    If preferred, you can skip this part and go directly to Step 3.
  3. In the What are you trying to do? section, scroll down to the function you are trying to perform and click it. (If there are subsets, they will appear in a separate box, where you can click a sub-topic.)

    Microsoft displays solutions in the View or run solutions section based on your choices.
  4. You can narrow the results in the View or run solutions section by entering keyword(s) in the Filter Solutions box and clicking the search button.
    Microsoft Fix It then displays the filtered solutions list.

  5. In the View or run solutions section:
    • Click Learn More to browse to a description page for solution instructions and/or information about an automated solution. If the solution is not the one you want to use, browse back to the View or run solutions section, and choose another solution.
      or
    • If there is a Run Now button next to a solution, you can launch the Microsoft Fix It application by clicking the button. Then skip to step 7 of this article for further instructions.

  6. If an automated solution is available, there is a Run now button or a Fix It icon on the description page. Click on the one that appears, to launch the Microsoft Fix It application.
  7. Follow the onscreen prompts to download and launch the Microsoft Fix It application.
  8. Once the Microsoft Fix It application is open, click Accept to continue.
    note:
    Instead of Accept, Microsoft Fix It may open up to a screen where you must check an I Agree box, and then click Next to continue.

  9. Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the solution procedure.
