HP E-mail - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive for HP Pavilion m6-1000, and HP ENVY m6-1100, m6-1200, and m6-1300 Notebook PCs - c03801889

Before you actually remove and replace the hard drive, please ensure the following:
  • You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
  • Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
  warning:
The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
  warning:
Before starting, power off the computer and wait for components to cool before starting these procedures.
  caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.
When you are ready to remove the hard drive, follow the steps in the order presented below.
  warning:
Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Step 1: Remove the battery
  1. On the bottom of the notebook, slide and hold the battery release latch into the release position to partially eject the battery.
  2. Lift and remove the battery.
Step 2: Remove the service cover
  1. Loosen the Phillips head screw that secures the service cover in place.
  2. Slide the battery release latch to release the primary service cover.
    note:
    If the primary service cover does not release, slide and hold the battery release latch while pressing the primary service cover.
  3. Lift and remove the service cover.
Step 3: Remove the hard drive
  1. Disconnect the hard drive cable from the system board.
  2. Remove the four Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive bracket to the base enclosure.
    Save the screws for hard drive replacement.
  3. Lift the hard disk drive assembly out of the hard disk drive bay.
  4. Disconnect the hard drive cable from the drive.
  5. Remove the four Phillips-head screws (two on each side) that secure the hard disk drive bracket to the hard disk drive.
    Save the screws for bracket replacement.
  6. Remove the hard disk drive bracket from the hard disk drive.
  7. Place the hard drive in an anti-static bag.
After removing the hard disk drive, take out the new hard disk drive from its protective packing and continue to the next step.
Step 4: Replace the hard drive
  1. Place the hard disk drive with the label facing up and align the hard disk drive bracket onto the hard disk drive.
  2. Replace the four screws that secure the hard drive bracket to the hard drive.
  3. Replace the four screws that secure the hard drive bracket to the hard drive.
  4. Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay over its alignment pins and screw holes.
  5. Replace the four Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive bracket to the base enclosure.
  6. Connect the hard disk drive cable to the system board.
Step 5: Replace the service cover
  1. Align the service cover in place.
  2. While pressing down, slide the primary service cover into position until it clicks into place.
  3. Tighten the Phillips head screw that secures the service cover in place.
Step 6: Replace the battery
  1. Align the bottom outer edge of the battery into the battery bay.
  2. Press down on the inner edge of the battery until it clicks into place.
