This document applies to HP computers with Windows 8 that came with the HP Connected Remote app preinstalled.

The HP Connected Remote mobile app is no longer available in app stores. Use the instructions in this document only if you have already installed the mobile app and want to use the HP Connected Remote software that came on your computer.

HP Connected Remote is an app that comes preinstalled on select Windows 8 HP computers. The app allows you to use your cell phone or tablet to wirelessly browse, search, and control media playback on your PC. With the mobile app installed on your Android or iOS device, pair your computer with the device, and then use the device as a remote control to play music tracks, display slide shows, play DVD or Blu-ray movies, and more, from anywhere in your home.

Setting up HP Connected Remote

The HP Connected Remote Windows 8 app comes preinstalled on your PC. The mobile app is no longer available in app stores, and must be installed on your mobile device before you can use HP Connected Remote. The computer and mobile device must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Use the steps in the following sections to set up the apps, and pair your PC and mobile device.

Setting up the Windows 8 app on your PC

The Windows 8 app must come preinstalled on your computer. The app is not available for download in the Windows 8 store. Use the steps in this section to set up the HP Connected Remote app on your PC.

Connect your computer to your home network. The PC can be connected to the network via Wi-Fi, or with a wired Ethernet connection.
Make sure that sharing is turned on for the selected network. For instructions, see Turn sharing on or off (in English) from Microsoft Support.

On the Windows 8 Start screen, type hp connected remote.
Click HP Connected Remote from the Apps search results.
Click Settings, and make sure Enable HP Connected Remote is turned On.

Click Check For Update.

If an update is available, click Install. Wait for the app updates to install.

The HP Connected Remote mobile app (for your smart phone or tablet)

The HP Connected Remote mobile app is no longer available in app stores. Use the instructions in this document if you have already installed the mobile app.

Pairing your mobile device and computer

If you have installed the HP Connected Remote mobile app, use it to pair your mobile device with your PC so that they can communicate with each other. Before pairing, ensure the following:

Your mobile device and PC must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The PC can be connected to the network wirelessly, or with a wired Ethernet connection.

note:
HP Connected Remote works via Wi-Fi connectivity only, and does not support networks that require a proxy server. The PC and mobile device cannot communicate with each other over mobile data networks, such as 3G or 4G, using this app.
On Android devices, the date and time settings of your mobile device and PC must match. If they do not match, synchronize the time and date settings before attempting to pair the device and computer. This is only required for the initial pairing. For more information, or if you receive an error message, see The mobile app displays an error message: "Check that your PC and mobile device are set to the same time zone and time and retry pairing.".

Use the following steps to pair your mobile device and PC:

On your mobile device, open the HP Connected Remote mobile app.

The mobile device screen displays a list of PCs that you can pair with your device. To refresh the list, tap the refresh button.

If the correct PC is not automatically listed, enter the IP address manually. See Manually enter your PC's IP address for instructions.
Tap the name of the PC you want to pair with.

The camera on your mobile device turns on, with a box outline on the screen. Aim the box at the QR code that displays on the PC screen. Alternatively, manually enter the four-digit number that appears below the QR code on the PC screen.

On the device, type a nickname for the PC you just added, and then tap the check mark in the upper right corner.

The PC and device are paired. The PC nickname should appear on the Select PC screen of the mobile app, and the mobile device name should appear in the Windows 8 app on the PC.

Manually enter your PC's IP address (if the PC does not appear on the list)

If the PC does not appear on the list of available PCs in the mobile app, it may be necessary to enter the IP address manually, using the following steps:

On the Select PC screen of the mobile app, tap the settings button.
Next to Edit PC, tap the plus sign button.

Enter the computer's IP address in the provided field, and then tap OK.

Using HP Connected Remote

HP Connected Remote works with the following media players: iTunes, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and PowerDVD. Begin using HP Connected Remote with the following steps:

Turn on your PC.
On your mobile device, open the HP Connected Remote mobile app.

On the Select PC screen of the mobile app, tap the PC name.

If the PC does not appear on the list, make sure the computer is turned on and connected to the Internet, and then tap the refresh button.
On the mobile app, tap the media player you want to use: iTunes (Music, TV Shows, Movies, Podcasts, User Playlists); Windows Media Center; Windows Media Player (Playlists, Music, Videos, Pictures, Recorded TV); or PowerDVD (for playing DVD or Blu-ray movies). If the name of a media player is gray and cannot be selected, that media player is not installed on the PC.

Playing music

Use the following steps to play and control playback of music:

In the mobile app, tap the media player you want to use to play music (for example, iTunes or Windows Media Player).

The music player opens on your PC screen.
Tap Music.

Browse by song, album, artist, or other category to find the music you want to play. Alternatively, tap the search button, and enter a keyword or phrase to search.
Tap a track to begin playback.
To access the Now Playing screen, tap the preview bar that appears in the mobile app at the bottom of the screen when you are playing media.

The Now Playing screen provides media playback controls: Play/pause, previous item, next item, skip backwards 30 seconds, skip forwards 30 seconds, repeat, shuffle, and volume control.

Tap the speaker button to open volume controls for both the app and the PC.

Tap the playlist button to view the current playlist.

Playing a DVD or Blu-ray movie

Use the following steps to play and control playback of a DVD or Blu-ray movie:

In the mobile app, tap the media player you want to use to play a DVD or Blu-ray movie (for example, PowerDVD or Windows Media Center).

The media player opens on your PC screen.
Insert the DVD or Blu-ray movie disc.
The mobile app displays a remote control screen. Use the screen the same way you would use a remote control: select, play, pause, skip forward or back, or otherwise navigate playback.

Changing the Windows 8 app settings

Click the Settings tab in the Windows 8 app to access the following settings:

Remove paired mobile devices: On the Paired Devices list, click the X next to the name of the device you want to remove. Click OK to confirm.

Automatically check for updates: Select Update software automatically to update the app when updates are available (without using the Check For Update button to check for updates manually).
Wake the computer remotely: When the setting Wake when HP Connected Remote on same network is turned on, the mobile app can wake the computer from sleep. The computer must be set to remember your password and sign in automatically. This setting is supported for PCs with a wired Ethernet connection, but may not be supported on PCs using a wireless connection.
Enable (or disable) HP Connected Remote: Use the Enable HP Connected Remote setting to turn the app on or off.

Changing the mobile app settings

Tap the settings

button on the main screen to access the following settings in the mobile app:

Remove paired PCs:

Android: On the Edit PC screen, tap the minus sign (-) button next to the PC you want to remove. When the Delete PC profile confirmation appears, tap OK.

iOS: On the PC Details screen, tap the Remove paired PC button, tap the minus sign (-) button next to the PC you want to remove, and then tap Delete.
Duplicate the PC display: This option is only available when a secondary external monitor or TV is connected to the computer. Place a check mark next to Duplicate display to enable. When enabled, the PC display is duplicated onto the secondary display. HDMI, DVI, VGA, and Wireless video connections are supported. Refer to your PC support documentation for instructions to connect a secondary display.

Rebuild media database: Tap the Rebuild media database button under the PC name to refresh the media collections in the app's media players. For example, if you recently loaded new music on your PC and it does not appear in the mobile app, use the Rebuild media database function to discover the new music and make it available in the app.

How do I reinstall the Windows 8 app?

Use Recovery Manager to reinstall the app. For instructions, refer to the HP support document Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers.

How do I update the Windows 8 app?

Use the following steps to update the HP Connected Remote Windows 8 app:

On your PC, double-click the HP Connected Remote app icon on the Windows desktop.
Click Settings.
Click Check For Update.

If an update is available, click Install. Wait for the app updates to install.

Why isn't my PC showing up in the list of available computers on the mobile app?

If your PC does not appear in the list of available computers, make sure your mobile device is connected to Wi-Fi and on the same network as the computer. If that does not take care of the problem, try the following troubleshooting steps until the PC appears on the list:

On the HP Connected Remote PC app, click the Settings tab and set Enable HP Connected Remote to On.

Start the HP Connected Remote service from the Task Manager, using the following steps:
1. Move your mouse pointer to the bottom left corner of your screen, right-click, and select Task Manager.
2. Click More details, and then click the Services tab.
3. In the list of services, locate HPConnectedRemote. Right-click the item, and then click Start.
4. Wait a few moments, and then refresh the list of PCs on your mobile device.
Configure your firewall or virus scan software to allow the HP Connected Remote service and user process: HPConnectedRemoteService and HPConnectedRemoteUser.

If the PC still does not appear on the list, you may need to enter the PC's IP address manually. For instructions, see Manually enter your PC's IP address.

Why can't I pair my mobile device and computer?

You may need to update to the latest version of the Windows 8 app. See How do I update the Windows 8 app? for information.

Why isn't my media showing up in the mobile app?

If some or all of your media does not appear in the mobile app, use the following steps:

On Android devices, the photo slide show in Windows Media Player may not sync to your device's screen.

Check that there is media in the library of the media application you are remotely controlling.
Restart your PC.
In the mobile app, tap the settings button, and select Rebuild media database.

note:
After updating iTunes, changes to its media library may not be visible on your mobile device. Launch iTunes once using your PC, and then the changes should be visible on the mobile device.

Why did a new account appear on the Windows 8 login screen on my PC?

HP Connected Remote adds an account to your PC. The HP Connected Remote User account enables remote login features.

The mobile app displays an error message: "No user logged in." How do I log in?

To correct the "No user logged in" error message, log in to your account on your PC.

The mobile app displays an error message: "The application needs user interaction." How do I fix it?

When you see the error message "The application needs user interaction," this means the PC is waiting for your input. Go to the PC and perform the prompted task.

Why won't my mobile device screen rotate?

The mobile app does not switch to landscape mode when the device is turned. The Android and iOS mobile apps only support portrait mode.

The mobile app displays an error message: "Check that your PC and mobile device are set to the same time zone and time and retry pairing." How do I fix it?

Use the steps in this section to correct the error message. This only needs to be done for the initial pairing.

Make sure your mobile device is set to the correct time zone. If the time and date setting is set to manual, reset it to automatically update date and time.
On your PC, click the time and date notification in the Windows desktop taskbar.
Click Change date and time settings.

Make sure the time zone is set to the same time zone as your mobile device. Click the drop-down list to select a new time zone, if necessary, and then click OK.

In the Customize Format window, change the Date formats to M/dd/yy (Short date) and MMMM d, yyyy (Long date), and then click OK.

In the Date and Time window, select the Internet Time tab, and then click Change settings.

Make sure there is a check mark next to Synchronize with an Internet time server. In the Server drop-down menu, make sure time.windows.com is selected.
Click Update now to update the time and date settings, and then click OK.

Retry pairing. The mobile device and PC should now pair successfully.
