HP Deskjet Printers - Blinking Lights
The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
note:The flashing J might look like a backwards letter L.

CauseThe printer does not turn on.
Solutions
Solution one: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in
Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and plugged into an electrical outlet.
-
Check the rear of the printer to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
-
Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.
-
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

If the printer turns on, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

If the printer does not turn on, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Make sure that the electrical outlet works
-
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
-
Plug another appliance into the electrical outlet to make sure that the outlet works.
-
If the electrical outlet does not work, plug the printer into another outlet that does work.
-
If the electrical outlet works, but the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Make sure that the power supply is compatible with the HP All-in-One
The term power supply refers to both the power module and the power cord.
note:To make sure that your printer and power supply are compatible, HP suggests you use the original power supply shipped with your printer.

In this example, the voltage (+32 V) and the amperage (2000 mA) from the power supply are compatible with the voltage and amperage specified on the HP printer. -
If the voltage and amperage specifications of the printer and the power supply are compatible, make sure that the connector on the power cord is the same shape and size as the connector on the HP printer.
warning:
Do not force an incompatible power cord (its plug has a different shape or size than the HP printer's electrical connection) into an HP printer.-
If the power cord is not compatible with the printer, replace the power cord with a compatible cord. To buy a compatible cord, go to the following link, How to Buy HP.

If the power cord is compatible with the printer, but the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.
-
Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power
The power module has a safety feature that protects the printer during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, you might need to reset the power module.
Step 1: Reset the power module
Follow these steps to reset the power module.
-
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
-
Unplug the power cord from the power module.
-
Wait 15 seconds.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
-
Plug the power cord back into the power module.
-
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector until after the issue is resolved.

Check to see if the power module has an LED light.

If the power module does not have an LED light, continue to the next step.

If the power module has an LED light, check to see if the LED lights up.

If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, go to the following link, How to Buy HP.

If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Test the power on the All-in-One
Follow these steps to test the power on the printer.
-
Press, and then quickly release the Power button to start a Power On/Off cycle. Do not hold the button down.
If you press and hold the Power button too long, the printer might turn on and then turn off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button again. -
Check the printer to make sure that it is on.
-
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
-
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different printer
If you have another available power cord that is compatible with your printer, use the alternate cord and repeat the steps in the solution to reset the power module and then test the power.
-
If the printer turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Go to the following link, How to Buy HP, to buy a compatible power cord.

If the printer does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.
Solution six: Service the All-in-One
If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.
Issue: The Power light is breathing
In this error condition, the Power light slowly brightens and dims.

CauseThe printer is in sleep mode. After the initial setup, the printer enters sleep mode after five minutes of inactivity.
Solution: Wake from sleep mode
Either press any button on the printer control panel, or start a print job from the computer to wake the printer from sleep mode.
Issue: The Power light is blinking fast and the Attention light is on

Solution two: Reset the All-in-One
Follow these steps to reset the printer.
Step 1: Reset the All-in-One
Resetting the All-in-One might resolve the issue.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-
Wait at least 15 seconds.
-
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
-
Turn the printer on.
Step 2: Print a test page
Printing a test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a test page.
-
Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper into the input tray.
-
Press and hold the Start Copy Black button (
) and the Start Copy Color button (
) until the printer makes some noise. -

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.

Solution three: Service the All-in-One

Solution two: Reset the All-in-One
Resetting the printer can recalibrate the printer to the correct functionality.
Step 1: Reset the All-in-One
Follow these steps to reset the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-
Wait at least 15 seconds.
-
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
-
Turn the printer on.
Step 2: Print a test page
Printing a test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a test page.
-
Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper into the input tray.

Issue: All the lights are blinking fast, and the letter E blinks normally in the segment display counter
In this error condition, all of the control panel lights blink fast, and the letter "E" is displayed on the segment display counter:

CauseThe printer is in a fatal error state.
Solutions
Use the following solutions to resolve a fatal error.
Solution one: Reset the All-in-One
Follow these steps to reset the printer.
-
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-
Wait at least 15 seconds.
-
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
-
Turn the printer on.
-
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
-
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Plug the All-in-One directly into an electrical outlet
Plug the product directly into an electrical outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.
-
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
-
Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
-
Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
-
Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. -
Try the task again.If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.
-
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Service the All-in-One

Issue: One or both ink level icons blink for 20 seconds, then stays on
In this error condition, the following control panel indicators are displayed.

Power light: On
-
Attention light: Off
-
Color ink level icon: Normal blinking for 20 seconds then on or current ink level
-
Black ink level icon: Normal blinking for 20 seconds then on or current ink level
-
Ink error indicator: Off
-
Media error indicator: Off
-
Segment display counter: Displays any quantity of copies remaining

CauseThe ink level is low in one or both cartridges
-
If both Ink Level icons are blinking, there is an issue with both cartridges.
-
If the left Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the tri-color cartridge.
-
If the right Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the black cartridge.
-
Solutions
If one (or both) of the cartridges is low on ink, you do not need to replace the cartridges yet, unless you are dissatisfied with the print quality.
Solution one: Check the ink levels
Follow these steps to check the ink levels.
note:The cartridge ink levels are also displayed on the control panel's LCD.

Open the HP printer software:
-
Windows 8On the Start screen, click or tap the printer's tile. The software opens.

You can also open the HP software by clicking or tapping the printer's icon on the desktop (

Windows 7Click Start (
), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer (

You can also open the HP printer software from your computer desktop by double-clicking the icon for your HP printer (

In the printer software, click Estimated Ink Levels, and the toolbox window opens.The HP Toolbox opens a graphic that shows the estimated ink levels for your printer.Figure : The estimated ink levels graphic

If the estimated ink levels are low, and you are satisfied with the quality of your printouts, ignore the light(s) until you are dissatisfied with the printouts.If the estimated ink levels are low, and you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, replace the cartridges. Continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge
Follow these steps in the order given to replace the cartridge(s).
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to Printer and Page Yield Overview, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
Step 1: Replace the cartridge
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
-
Load plain white paper into the input tray.
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.Figure : Open the cartridge access door
note:
The outside of the printer might not look exactly the same as your printer, but the steps are the same. -
Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.Figure : Remove the cartridge
caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pull tab to remove the plastic tape.Figure : Remove the plastic tape
-
Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the cartridge is inserted in the proper slot.Figure : Insert the correct cartridge into the slot

Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.Figure : Snap the cartridge into place
-
Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.

Follow any prompts on the screen.
-
Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print.Figure : The alignment page prints automatically after 30 seconds

The printer prints an alignment page automatically only when a new cartridge has been installed.
Step 2: Align the cartridges
Scan the alignment page calibrate the cartridges for best print quality.

Lift the scanner lid.
-
Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.Figure : Place the alignment page on the scanner glass

Close the scanner lid.
-
Press the Scan button (
) to begin the scan. The printer automatically aligns the cartridges.
Step 3: Print a test page
Printing a test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a test page.

-
Press and hold the Start Copy Black button (
) and the Start Copy Color button (
) until the printer makes some noise. -

Issue: One or both Ink Level icons are blinking normally

Causes
-
One or both cartridges are incompatible with the printer.
-
One or both cartridges are defective.
-
One or both cartridges still have the protective tape on the nozzles.
-
One or both cartridges are installed wrong, installed in the wrong slot, or have failed.
-
A problem has occurred with one or both cartridges.
-
If both Ink Level icons are blinking, there is an issue with both cartridges.
-
If the left Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the tri-color cartridge.
-
If the right Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the black cartridge.
-
-
Solutions
Use the following solutions to solve a problem with the cartridges.
Solution one: Check cartridge compatibility and installation
Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your printer.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if the power is not already on.
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before proceeding.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridges are in the correct slots. Check the icons on the top of each cartridge. Make sure that they match the icons for the slots they're installed in.The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left.The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.-
If the icons do not match, remove the cartridges, and then insert them in the correct slots.
-
If the icons match, continue with these steps.
-
-
Find the number on the label on the top of each cartridge.
-

Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the cartridge access door.
-
Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.For instructions on how to replace the cartridges, skip to the solution to replace the cartridges.
Solution two: Remove, inspect, and clean the problem cartridge
Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts.
note:If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges.

Gather the following items:
-
Distilled water (use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available)
-
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well)
-
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the center of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.Figure : Remove the cartridge
caution:

If protective tape is still on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.Figure : Remove the protective tape
If you removed the protective tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge. -
Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
-
Dip a cotton swab into the clean distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
-
Clean the cartridge contacts.
caution:
Avoid touching the nozzles.Figure : Clean the cartridge contacts
note:
Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. -
Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge.

Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge and carriage to dry.
-
Place the cartridge in its slot at a slightly upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.
-
The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left. -
The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
-

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Turn the printer off and then on again
Turning off the printer and then turning it on again recalibrates the cartridges.
-
Press the Power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, continue to the next solution.
-
Wait 60 seconds.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
note:
The printer might go through a warm-up period, which might last several minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue.
Solution four: Repeat the cartridge cleaning steps
If the error message still displays on the printer control panel, repeat the previous steps to clean the cartridges, and then make sure that each cartridge is correctly inserted.
Solution five: Replace the problem cartridge
Step 1: Replace the cartridge
Follow these steps to remove the problem cartridge and then insert a new cartridge into the carriage.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
-
Load plain white paper into the input tray.
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Before you check for any jammed paper inside the printer, remove any loose paper or other materials that are in the input or output trays.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray.

Use the following steps to check for and remove jammed paper from the base of the HP product.

Turn the product so that you can access its underside (base).

Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.

If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams can occur. -
Reach inside the printer through the cartridge door, and then manually move the carriage.

Solution four: Clean the rollers
Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.
Step 1: Clean the rollers

Turn off the printer.

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
-
Raise the input tray.
-
Pull the input tray guard back and hold it so you can look inside the input tray.
note:
If your printer does not have an input tray guard, skip to the next step.

Look down through the open input tray and find the gray paper pick rollers. You might need a flashlight to illuminate the area.
-
Dampen a long cotton swab with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
-
Press the swab against the rollers and rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.
-
Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.
-
Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
-
Turn on the printer.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.

Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Clear any obstructions that you find. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Step 2: Reinstall the cartridges
Follow these steps to reinstall the cartridges. Repeat the steps for each cartridge.

Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.

Solution two: Connect the printer to the computer
Follow these steps to connect your printer to your computer.

Connect one end of the USB cable to the printer, and then connect the other end to a USB port on your computer.Figure : Example USB connection

Attempt to start a print job.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
-
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Install the printer software
Use one of the following methods to install the HP printer software onto your computer.
Method one: Use the software installation CD.
Your All-in-One comes with a CD used to install the printer software.
-
Remove the CD from its packaging, and then insert it into your computer's optical drive.Figure : Insert the installation CD

Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
Method two: Download and install the software from the internet
-
Turn on the printer.
-
Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
-
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
-
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
-
Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
-
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
-
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Set your printer as the default printer
Follow these steps to select a default printer.
Windows
-
Press the Power button to turn the printer on.
-
Click the Start button, if using Windows XP, or the (
) button if using Windows 7 or Vista. -
Click Devices and Printers. A window opens displaying all the devices currently connected to your computer.
-
Find the printer you wish to set as your default printer. Move your mouse over the name or icon of the selected device.
-
Right click your mouse, and then select Set as Default Printer from the drop down menu. This is now your default printer.
-
Attempt another print job.
Mac
-
Press the Power button to turn the printer on.
-
On the desktop, click the Apple icon (
), and then click System Preferences. -
Click Print & Scan. The Print & Scan window opens.
-
Select your printer from the Default Printer menu. This is now your default printer.
Issue: The Ink Error Indicator, both Ink Level icons, and the Attention light blink fast, and the Power light blinks normally
In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Normal blinking
-
Attention light: Fast blinking
-
Color ink level icon: Empty gauge, fast blinking
-
Black ink level icon: Empty gauge, fast blinking
-
Ink error indicator: Fast blinking

Media error indicator: Off

Segment display counter: Displays any quantity of copies remaining

CauseThe cartridge access door is open and there is an error for both the tri-color and black cartridges.
Solutions
Use the following solutions to solve a problem with the cartridges.
Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Check the printer control panel for the blinking lights.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Check cartridge compatibility and installation
Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your printer.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if the power is not already on.
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before proceeding.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridges are in the correct slots. Check the icons on the top of each cartridge. Make sure that they match the icons for the slots they're installed in.The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left.The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.-
If the icons do not match, remove the cartridges, and then insert them in the correct slots.

If the icons match, continue with these steps.
-

Find the number on the label on the top of each cartridge.
-

Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the cartridge access door.

Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.For instructions on how to replace the cartridges, skip to the solution to replace the cartridges.
Solution three: Remove, inspect, and clean the problem cartridge
Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts.
note:If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges.

Gather the following items:
-
Distilled water (use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available)
-
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well)
-
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the center of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-
Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.Figure : Remove the cartridge
caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles

If protective tape is still on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.Figure : Remove the protective tape
If you removed the protective tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge. -
Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
-
Dip a cotton swab into the clean distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
-
Clean the cartridge contacts.
caution:
Avoid touching the nozzles.Figure : Clean the cartridge contacts
note:
Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. -
Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge.
warning:

Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge and carriage to dry.
-
Place the cartridge in its slot at a slightly upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.

The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left. -
The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Turn the printer off and then on again
Turning off the printer and then turning it on again recalibrates the cartridges.
-
Press the Power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, continue to the next solution.
-
Wait 60 seconds.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
note:
The printer might go through a warm-up period, which might last several minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue.
Solution five: Repeat the cartridge cleaning steps
If the error message still displays on the printer control panel, repeat the previous steps to clean the cartridges, and then make sure that each cartridge is correctly inserted.
Solution six: Replace the problem cartridge
Step 1: Replace the cartridge
Follow these steps to remove the problem cartridge and then insert a new cartridge into the carriage.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
-
Load plain white paper into the input tray.
-
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.Figure : Open the cartridge access door
note:
The outside of the printer might not look exactly the same as your printer, but the steps are the same. -
Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.Figure : Remove the cartridge
caution:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.Figure : Do not touch the contacts or nozzles

Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pull tab to remove the plastic tape.Figure : Remove the plastic tape

Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the cartridge is inserted in the proper slot.Figure : Insert the correct cartridge into the slot

Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.Figure : Snap the cartridge into place

Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.

Follow any prompts on the screen.

Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print.Figure : The alignment page prints automatically after 30 seconds
note:
The printer prints an alignment page automatically only when a new cartridge has been installed.
Step 2: Align the cartridge
Scanning the alignment page recalibrates the cartridges for best print quality.

Lift the scanner lid.
-
Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.Figure : Place the alignment page on the scanner glass

Close the scanner lid.
-
Press the Scan button (
) to begin the scan. The printer automatically aligns the cartridges.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution seven: Service the All-in-One
If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.
Issue: The Color ink level icon or the Black ink level icon is empty and blinks normally
In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: On

Attention light: Off
-
Color ink level icon: Empty gauge (or current ink level) blinks normally.

Black ink level icon: Empty gauge (or current ink level) blinks normally.

Ink error indicator: Off

CauseThe printer is in single cartridge mode: the black cartridge or the tri-color cartridge is missing.
note:During single-cartridge mode, the printer can copy documents, copy photos, and print jobs from the computer.
Solution: Install the missing cartridge
Follow these steps to install a cartridge in the printer.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
Step 1: Install the missing cartridge
Follow these steps to install a cartridge that has not been installed in the printer yet.
-
Turn on the printer, and open the cartridge access door.Figure : Open the cartridge access door

The cartridge carriage moves to the center.
note:
If cartridge access door is open longer than five minutes, the cartridge carriage returns to its normal operating position. -
Using a flashlight if necessary, verify that the black or tri-color cartridge is missing.

An alignment page prints.
Step 2: Align the cartridges
Follow the steps to align the cartridges.

Lift the scanner lid.

Close the scanner lid.

Press the Scan button (
) to begin the scan. The printer automatically aligns the cartridges.
Issue: One or both Ink Level icons display as empty and blink fast, the Ink Error Indicator blinks fast, and the Attention light is on

Service the All-in-One
Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
