HP Designjet Ultra Low End Printer Series - Part of the Print is Clipped or Missing

Issue

While printing on wide (above letter or legal size) media, part of the Prints are clipped or part of print is missing.
Issue observed:
  • With different applications, files and computers.
  • Even after different or new communication cable has been tried (USB or Parallel).
  • Even after printer driver has been re-installed or upgraded.
  • Even after printer firmware has been upgraded or re-flashed.
Example: Prints of 11 x 17 inches size image printed on 11 x 17 inches Tabloid media at 1:1 scaling, prints are only 9 x 17 inches.
Cause: Dirt or Aerosol build up on Encoder Strip.

Solution

Clean the encoder strip located under the Top Cover by following the steps provided below.
  caution:
Extreme care must be taken during the cleaning process. If too much pressure is placed on the Encoder Strip, it could become scratched (destroying the etching on the strip), bent, broken, or even become dislodged from the inside of the printer. If damage of this type occurs, the printer must be serviced.
  1. With the printer turned on, open the top right cover to allow the carriage to move to the center of the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer.
  3. Slide the carriage to the far-right position.
  4. Identify the semi-clear Encoder Strip (highlighted with red lines), located just above the round, metal carriage rod.

  5. Moisten a clean lint-free cloth with water, then gently grasp the strip between the thumb and forefinger, and carefully pull the moistened cloth along the entire length of the strip in a right-to-left direction. Repeat this step with a different portion of the cloth to ensure that all foreign matter is removed.
  6. Move the carriage to the far-left position and repeat step 5 on the right side of the Encoder Strip, beginning as far right as possible. Again, gently pull the cloth in a right-to-left direction.
  7. Allow the Encoder Strip to dry, or gently dry the Encoder Strip with a clean, dry cloth or tissue.
  8. Position the carriage near the center, and then plug the power cord into the printer.
  9. Close the top cover to allow the carriage to move back to the right of the printer.
  10. Use the HP Designjet System Maintenance utility to perform a printhead alignment (select Maintain printheads, then Align printheads).
  11. Print and confirm that the printer is functioning properly.
