HP ProBook 4331s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 4331s Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdriver

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation* (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    • Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
    • Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components
  2. Slide the battery release latches towards the battery icons to disengage the battery.
  3. Remove the battery by lifting it out of the battery bay.
  4. Slide the battery release latches towards the battery icons until the service door disengages from the base enclosure.
  5. Lift the service door and remove it.
  6. Remove the one 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screw identified with an optical disk drive icon that secures the optical disk drive to the base enclosure.
  7. Release the optical disk drive from the base enclosure by sliding the tab marked with an optical disk drive icon to the left.
  8. Grasp the edge of the optical disk drive bezel and slide the optical disk drive out of the base enclosure.
  9. Remove the optical disk drive.
  10. Remove the one 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screw identified with a keyboard icon that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  11. Remove the one 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screw next to the system fan that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  12. Using a probe tool, gently press into the optical disk drive bay until the keyboard releases from the top cover.
  13. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  14. Using finger or a flat bladed non-marring tool, gently lift up on the rear edge of the keyboard to disengage the keyboard from the top cover.
  15. Slide the keyboard towards the rear of the notebook to release the tabs at the front of the keyboard.
  16. Turn the keyboard face down on the top cover.
      note:
    Do not lift the keyboard further away from the notebook than necessary to access the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector.
  17. Gently lift up on the locking bar to the keyboard ZIF connector and remove the keyboard ribbon cable.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  18. Remove the keyboard.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Place the keyboard face down on the top cover so that the keyboard ribbon cable and ZIF connector are accessible.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board and gently press down on the ZIF connector locking bar.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover.
  4. Press the keyboard flat until it engages with the top cover.
  5. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  6. Replace the one 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screw next to the system fan that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  7. Replace the one 6-mm P1 Phillips-head screw identified with a keyboard icon that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  8. Slide the optical disk drive into the optical disk drive bay.
  9. Replace the one 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screw identified with an optical disk drive icon that secures the optical disk drive to the base enclosure.
  10. Place the service door on the base enclosure.
  11. Slide the service door towards the rear of the notebook until it clicks into place.
  12. Lower the rear edge of the battery into the battery bay.
  13. Lower the front edge of the battery until it clicks into place.
