HP Elitebook 8440p Notebook PCs - Audio Output is Through Internal in-built Speakers Only but not Through External Speakers that are Plugged-In

Issue

On Notebooks with Windows 7 Operating System (both 32-bit and 64-bit), plugging in external speakers or headphones does not cut off/route audio from the internal speakers to the external speakers/headphones connected to audio jack of the notebook. Therefore, there is no audio output from the external speakers/headphone.

Solution

The issue occurs if the High Definition Audio device driver for the audio device is from native Windows 7 OS and dedicated high definition audio codecs are not installed, that is derived from High Definition Graphics drivers.
  1. Download and install the Graphics card drivers as found under Display Adapter (whichever applicable):
sp49328 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver for Microsoft Windows 7)
Click here to download the graphics driver for windows 7 @ https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49328.exe
sp49331 (Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver with Turbo Boost Technology)
Click here to download HD graphics drivers @ https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49331.exe
  2. Restart the notebook if prompted.
  3. Download and install the audio driver, if that is not installed yet:
sp46721 (IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver)
Click here to download HD audio drivers @ https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp46501-47000/sp46721.exe
  4. Right click on Speaker in System Tray, click on Playback Devices and make sure the audio device codec (IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Codec) is listed for Speakers.
  5. Plug in the external speaker or headphone and they should be displayed in Playback Devices window.
  6. Check if audio is rendered through the external speakers or headphone by plugging in audio jack and this should cut off audio to the Internal speakers.
