Compaq 420 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Memory Module

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the memory module for the Compaq 420 Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Memory module removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the memory module to the spring tension position.
    note:
    The primary and expansion memory slots are both located under the bottom door. The primary memory slot is located on the bottom and the expansion memory slot is located on top. If an expansion memory module is installed, it must be removed before the primary memory module can be removed.
  3. Grasp the memory module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the module. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  4. Place the memory module in a static dissipative bag.

Memory module replacement

  1. Grasp the memory module by its edges and remove the memory module from the static dissipative bag.
      caution:
    When handling a memory board, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the module. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
  2. Locate the alignment notch on the memory module and align it with the memory module connector on the system board.
  3. Gently push the memory module into the memory module connector until it is secure.
  4. Push the exposed edge of the memory module down until you hear the click of the two retention arms.
