Compaq Evo n610c Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the Compaq Evo n610c Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
Torx #8 (T8) screwdriver (preferably magnetized).

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the black T8-7 mm screw near the center of the base enclosure.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up.
  4. Open the display panel fully.
  5. Slide the four plastic locking tabs toward the keyboard to unlock the keyboard from the switch cover.
  6. Use a plastic flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and then place it upside down on the top cover.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick and keyboard ribbon cables.
  7. For notebooks with a pointing stick, unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector and remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the connector.
  8. Place the keyboard right side up on the top cover.
  9. Push the locking bar toward the rear of the notebook to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector.
  10. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the connector and remove the keyboard.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Place the keyboard right side up on the top cover.
  2. Insert the green keyboard ribbon cable stiffener into the top cover slot.
  3. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick and keyboard ribbon cables.
  4. Push the locking bar toward the front of the notebook to lock the ZIF connector.
  5. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover.
  6. For notebooks with a pointing stick, insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the ZIF connector and lock the ZIF connector.
  7. Place the keyboard right side up on the top cover and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover.
  8. Press the keyboard flat and slide the four plastic locking tabs toward the rear of the notebook to lock the keyboard to the switch cover.
  9. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  10. Replace the black T8-7 mm screw.
