HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer Series - Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Does Not Pick Up Paper

Issue

The automatic document feeder (ADF) does not pick up any pages.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Check the paper in the ADF

The condition of the paper or the amount of it loaded might prevent the ADF from picking it up and feeding it through the product.
  1. Make sure that no more than 50 sheets of paper are in the ADF tray.
  2. Make sure the original is not photo paper or carbon paper. You must load originals of these types on the scanner glass.
  3. Make sure the original document that you load in the ADF meets the following criteria:
    • Free from curls, folds, creases, and tears
    • Does not have staples or clips attached
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Clean the ADF

Follow these steps to clean the ADF.

Step one: Clean the rollers and separator pad in the ADF

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Remove all originals from the document feeder tray.
  4. Open the ADF cover.

    note:
If the residue does not come off using distilled water, try using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
  7. Close the ADF cover.

Step two: Clean the plastic strip inside the ADF

  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Open the ADF cover.

  5. Clean the plastic strip with a soft cloth or sponge slightly moistened with a nonabrasive glass cleaner.
      caution:
Do not use abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride on the plastic strip, since they can damage it. Do not place or spray liquid directly on the plastic strip. The liquid might seep under the glass and damage the device.
  6. Gently lower the ADF mechanism to avoid dislodging the plastic strip.
  7. Close the ADF cover.
  8. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  9. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the product

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
