HP Printers - Wired Network Printer Setup (Mac)

This document is for HP printers with wired (Ethernet) network support and Mac computers.
Install the HP print driver and software to set up your printer on a wired (Ethernet) network connection.

Step 1: Prepare for the driver installation and network connection

Before installing the driver, make sure you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.
  1. Make sure you have a network router with available Ethernet ports.
  2. Make sure your computer is connected to the router if it is not already connected.
  3. Obtain an Ethernet cable. Do not use a standard telephone cable.
Image: Ethernet and telephone cable comparison
    1. Ethernet cable: Connector is wide and has eight wires
    2. Telephone cable (do not use): Connector is narrow and has between two and six wires

Step 2: Connect the printer to the network

Connect the Ethernet cable to the printer and to the router, switch, or hub so that the printer is found during installation.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the rear of the printer.
  3. Connect the Ethernet cable to the printer and an available port on the router.

Step 3: Install the software

Install the HP print driver to complete the network printer setup.
  1. Go to 123.hp.com, enter your printer model, and then click Begin. Depending on your printer and operating system version, the guided driver installation app HP Easy Start downloads, or you are redirected to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page to install the full feature driver.
    • If HP Easy Start downloads, follow the on-screen instructions to open the download file to start the setup. When prompted to choose a connection type, select Wired Network. You do not need to complete the remaining steps in this section if the setup is successful.
    • If Easy Start fails or your printer is not listed on 123.hp.com, continue with these steps to install a driver from the HP website.
  2. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, type your printer model, if prompted, and then confirm the operating system version is correct.
  3. Under Driver-Product Installation Software, click Download next to HP Easy Start or the full feature driver, depending on the option that displays, and then open the HP Easy Start file or the HP .dmg file in the Downloads folder or browser bar to begin the installation.
    note:
If Installing a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update displays instead of a download button, click Learn more to read steps to install the print driver through Apple Software Update.
  4. If you are prompted to add the printer to the printer queue, click the name of your printer, click the Use or Print Using menu, select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu, and then click Add.

Select your printer name in the Use menu on the Add screen
  5. Return to the HP installer to complete the installation.
If the printer is not found or connected during installation, see Printer Not Found During Network Driver Setup (Mac).
