HP All-in-One Printers - The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Does Not Pick Paper

This document is for all HP All-in-One Printers that have an automatic document feeder (ADF).
The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on the printer does not pick paper. The issue might include an error message on the printer control panel display, blinking or flashing lights, or an error message on the computer.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that no more than 50 sheets of paper are loaded in the ADF input tray at one time. If the ADF picks single sheets but does not pick from stacks of paper, make sure you are inserting the proper amount of paper.

Step 1: Check the condition of the paper and reload it

Remove the paper from the ADF and make sure that the paper is clean, doesn’t have staples or labels, is undamaged and in good condition, and then reload the paper into the ADF. The type and condition of paper can affect the way the ADF picks paper.
The edges of low-quality paper that has absorbed moisture might curl or lift the sheet so the paper does not feed into the ADF. Likewise, Photo paper or other paper types with glossy surfaces might not pick well and should be avoided. If you are unsure if you should send paper through the ADF, use the flatbed scanner.
  1. Remove the paper from the ADF.
  2. As a test, obtain 10 sheets of new plain white paper to form a stack of paper.
  3. Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
Do not fan the paper by running your fingers through the paper stack.
  4. Insert the stack of paper into the ADF input tray. Make sure the stack is inserted fully into the input tray and that the printer recognizes that paper has been loaded. When paper is properly loaded into the ADF, the printer should make a sound, emit a light from an LED, or display a message on the control panel.
  5. Slide in the paper width guide to the edge of the paper stack. Make sure that the guide rests gently against the paper stack and does not bind it.
  6. Try using the ADF again.
    • If the ADF picked all the sheets in the stack of paper, then reinsert your original(s) and try copying or scanning again.
    • If the ADF did not pick all sheets in the stack of paper, then continue to step 2: Clean the ADF.
  7. If your original fails to pick, but all sheets in the test stack of paper picked, then use the flatbed scanner to scan your original.

Step 2: Clean the ADF pick rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pick rollers and cause paper feed issues. To help prevent paper feed issues, clean the rollers inside the ADF.
  1. Open the ADF cover.

  2. Lightly moisten a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled, filtered, or bottled water.
Do not use tap water or alcohol. Alcohol can dry out rollers. Tap water contains impurities that can damage rollers.
Press the cloth against the roller while rotating it with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.

  3. Clean the separator pad using the same cloth.
  4. Firmly close the ADF cover.
  5. Try using the ADF again.
    • If the ADF picked the paper, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
    • If the ADF did not pick the paper, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Reset the printer

Follow these steps to reset the printer.
  1. Without turning the printer off, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the printer, if it did not power on automatically.
    • If the ADF picked the paper, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
    • If the ADF did not pick the paper, continue to the next solution step

Step 4: Service the printer

If the other steps in this document fail to resolve the error, then service or replace the printer.
Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
