HP Printers - 'Error 1706' While Scanning (Windows)

While scanning from HP Director or Solution Center in Microsoft Windows, an 'Error 1706' message displays on the computer. The 'Error 1706' message indicates that the Windows Installer cannot find the scan.msi file.
Install the missing file from the CD
If you have the software CD that shipped with your printer, you can use it to install the missing file. If you do not have the software CD, skip to the section to download the missing file from the HP website.
  1. Close the Locate File window that contains the 'Error 1706' message, if you have not already done so.
  2. Insert the HP software CD into the CD drive on the computer. If the HP installation screen opens, click Exit to cancel the installation.
  3. Search Windows for 'explorer', and then click File Explorer or Windows Explorer in the results, depending on your operating system.
    FIle or Windows Explorer opens in a new window.
  4. Navigate to the CD drive on your computer, and then click the plus sign
    next to the CD drive to expand the list.
  5. Click the plus sign next to the Setup folder, and then click the Scan folder.
  6. Double-click the Scan.msi file icon .
    The Windows Installer window opens, and then installs the missing file.
  7. Try to scan again.
    • If the printer scans successfully, the problem is fixed. There is no need to continue troubleshooting.
    • If the printer does not scan successfully, continue to the next section to Download the missing file from the HP website.
Download the missing file from the HP website
If you do not have the software CD that shipped with your printer, download and install the file from the HP website.
Step 1: Download the missing file from the HP website
Download the missing file from the HP website.
  1. Close the Locate File window with the 'Error 1706' message, if you have not already done so.
  2. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
    The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.
  3. If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
  4. Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
  5. Save the driver somewhere you will remember.
Step 2: Install the missing file
Install the missing file.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the missing file, browse to the folder where you saved the driver. The file name ends in .exe.
  2. Double-click the file, and then wait while the file extracts.
  3. When the HP installation screen opens, click Exit to cancel the installer.
  4. Search Windows for 'Run', and then press Enter.
    The Run dialog box opens in a new window.
  5. In the Open text box, type %temp%, and then press Enter.
    The Temp folder opens in a new window.
      note:
    If the Temp folder displays in a one-pane view, click View, click Explorer Bar, and then click Folders to display the two-pane view.
  6. In the left pane, click the plus sign next to the folder that begins with 7XXXX or 7XXXX.tmp (the X values vary).
      note:
    There might be more than one 7XXXX folder in the Temp folder on your computer. You might have to search through each of these folders until you find the associated file.
  7. Within the 7XXXX folder, click the plus sign next to the Setup folder.
  8. Within the Setup folder, click the plus sign next to the Scan folder.
      note:
    If you cannot find the Scan folder, look for another 7XXXX folder, and then search again.
  9. Within the Scan folder, double-click the Scan.msi file icon .
    The Windows Installer opens, and then installs the missing file.
