Blinking Lights on the HP PSC 1400 All-in-One Printer Series

Blinking Lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights on the product control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Power light

Issue: All lights are blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinking
Check Paper light: Blinking
Check Cartridge light: Blinking
Size lights: Both Blinking
Paper Type lights: Both Blinking
Start Copy Black light: Blinking
Start Copy Color light: Blinking

Cause

The product has a fatal error.

Solutions

Solution one: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the control panel overlay is installed correctly

If the control panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product might indicate a false carriage stall error condition. If the product has not been set up before, use the following instructions to make sure the control panel overlay is installed correctly.

If you already installed the control panel overlay, and your printer has been working for some time, do not attempt to reinstall the overlay. Press firmly on the overlay to ensure proper installation of the overlay adhesive or pins.

note:
If you have already installed the control panel overlay, proceed to the next solution.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Locate the control panel overlay, and then peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive.
Lift the scanner lid.
Carefully line up and install the control panel overlay.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Check Paper light is blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: On
Check Paper light: Blinking
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product is out of paper, has a paper jam, or the paper size setting does not match the paper size detected in the paper tray.

Solutions

Solution one: Load paper, and then resume the print job

If the paper tray is empty, load more paper into the paper tray.

Make sure that the paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges.
Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type.
Tap the stack on a flat surface to even the edges.
Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
Open the paper tray extender.

caution:
Legal paper might get caught on the paper tray extender if it is fully extended when you print onto legal paper. To avoid a paper jam when using legal-size paper, do not open the paper tray extender.
Insert the paper into the paper tray.

note:
Pushing the paper in too far could result in more than one sheet of paper feeding into the product and/or paper jams.
Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Check the paper

There are several paper-related problems that can cause the Check Paper light

to blink. Check the stack of paper for any of the following conditions:

Paper that has already been printed on
Crumpled or folded paper
Textured paper
Specialty paper
Envelopes may occasionally feed incorrectly because the envelope flap moves as the rollers grip it. Use envelopes with a rectangular flap and/or fold the flap inside the envelope when printing.

To determine if the paper is the cause, try using some clean, undamaged sheets of plain, inkjet-rated 70 to 90 gsm (20- to 24-pound bond) paper, such as HP Multipurpose or Bright White paper. If that paper feeds correctly, there might be a problem with the other paper.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Change the print driver settings

Follow these steps to change the print driver settings.

Step 1: Change the settings

Select one of the following methods to change the paper size setting to match the print job. Create a custom paper size only if the correct paper size is not an option.

Select an existing paper size

In the program you are printing in, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click More to access the paper size options. The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to the appropriate paper size category, and then select the paper size that matches the paper loaded in the product.
Click OK to accept the settings.

Create a custom paper size

In the program you are printing in, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

note:
The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
Click the Features tab.
From the Size: drop-down list, click Custom. The Custom Paper Size window opens.
In the Name box, type a name for the paper size you are using. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4x8 envelopes.

note:
You must type a custom size name in the Name box. If you do not, the Save button is unavailable when you try to save the setting.
In the Paper Size area, type the measurement in the Width and Length boxes. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4 in the Width box, and type 8 in the Length box.
In the Units area, select the appropriate unit of measure, and then click Save.

note:
If Save is unavailable, make sure that there is a name for the setting in the Name box.
Click OK to accept the settings. The Custom Paper Size window closes.
From the Size: drop-down list on the Features tab, click More.
The Size is: window opens.
In the Size is: list, scroll down to Custom, and then select the custom paper size you created.
Click OK to accept the settings.

Step 2: Print from the application again

Try to reproduce the error that caused the blinking lights. If you cannot remember, follow these steps:

In the program you are printing in, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
Click OK.
Check for the blinking lights.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Clear the paper jam

Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Experiencing frequent or recurring paper jams?

Preventing paper jams

The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.

Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.

caution:
Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
Do not overload the tray with paper.
Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.

Causes of paper jams

The following factors can cause paper jams:

Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
The rear access door or two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) might not be closed or is not locked into place.
Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
The tray contains more than one type of paper.
The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
The tray is too full.
If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.

Step 1: Remove any loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step 2: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the product

Lower the paper tray.
Press the Power button to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the product to remove it.
Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

caution:
If the paper tears, remove the torn pieces from the rollers and wheels. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
Reattach the rear access door. Slide the two pins on the right side of the door into the two holes on the right of the product, and then snap the left side into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

Step 3: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One

Press the Power button to turn on the product, if the product is not already on.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area.
When the carriage stops moving, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Gently remove any jammed paper.

note:
Remove paper from the front of the product as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.
Make sure that no scraps of paper are stuck between the rollers.
Close the cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.

Step 4: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to verify that the hardware functions correctly.

Press and hold the Cancel button , and then press the Start Copy Color button .
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution five: Make sure that the carriage can move freely

Follow these steps in the order given to make sure that the carriage moves freely.

Step 1: Check the paper path

Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

caution:
Disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet.
Check for any paper or object that might be restricting the carriage.

note:
You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions you find.
Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
Close the cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.

Step 2: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to verify that the hardware functions correctly.

Press and hold the Cancel button , and then press the Start Copy Color button .
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution six: Clean the rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step 1: Clean the rollers

Follow these steps to remove any debris, dirt, or paper scraps from the rollers.

Gather the following materials:
- A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
Press the Power button to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door to release the door. Pull the door away from the product to remove it.
Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.
Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.
Reattach the rear access door. Slide the two pins on the right side of the door into the two holes on the right of the product, and then snap the left side into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.

Step 2: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to verify that the hardware functions correctly.

Press and hold the Cancel button , and then press the Start Copy Color button .
Release both buttons at the same time. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution seven: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Solution eight: Service the All-in-One

Issue: The Check Cartridge light is blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: On
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Blinking
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause: The cartridge access door is open or a problem has occurred with a cartridge.

Solutions

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Check the cartridge access door to make sure that it is closed completely. If it is open, close it.

If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Resolve the cartridge problem

Follow the steps in the order given to resolve the cartridge problem.

Step 1: Determine which cartridge is the problem

Select the method to determine which cartridge is the problem, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

If the All-in-One is connected to a computer

If the product is connected to a computer, and if the HP software is installed on the computer, you should have seen a message displayed on the computer.

If the message on the computer indicates that a specific cartridge is causing the problem, continue to the next step.
If the message on the computer does not identify a particular cartridge (it says only Print cartridge error), follow these steps to determine which cartridge is causing the problem.
1. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.
2. Remove one cartridge (not both).
3. Close the cartridge access door.
  - If the computer message is Print Cartridge Error, then the cartridge that is still in the product is the problem cartridge.
  - If the computer message is NOT Print Cartridge Error (instead, it says that the cartridge you have removed is ... Either missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed), then the cartridge you have removed is the problem cartridge.
4. Continue to the next step: Clean the problem cartridge contacts.

If the All-in-One is not connected to a computer

If the product is not connected to a computer, or the HP software is not installed, there is no computer message. Follow these steps to identify the problem cartridge.

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.
Press down on the cartridge on the right to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.
Close the cartridge access door.
- If the Check Cartridge light starts blinking, the tricolor cartridge (the cartridge on the left) is the problem cartridge. Continue to the next step.
- If the Check Cartridge light does not blink, you cannot tell which cartridge is the problem cartridge. Continue to the next step and clean both cartridge contacts.

Step 2: Clean the problem cartridge contacts

Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts:

Gather the following items:
- Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available.
- Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

warning:
Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the product to avoid an electrical shock.
Press down on the problem cartridge to release it, and then pull it towards you to remove it.
If there is tape on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.

If you removed the tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge.
Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only lightly damp.
Clean the cartridge contacts.

caution:
Avoid touching the nozzles.

note:
Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside the product for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry out and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the product for too long.
Dip a clean swab in the water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
Clean the contacts in the carriage slot for the problem cartridge.

warning:
Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the product to avoid an electrical shock.

The carriage

The gold-colored contacts in the carriage slots
Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge and carriage to dry.
Place the cartridge in its slot at a slight, upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Close the cartridge access door.

An alignment page prints after about a minute.

Step 3: Align the cartridges

Follow these steps to align the cartridges. If the product does not complete the cartridge alignment, it will print an alignment page every time you turn on the product.

Open the scanner lid.
Place the alignment page face down on the scanner glass in the lower-left corner.
Close the scanner lid while holding the alignment page in place.
Press the Scan button on the control panel. The product aligns the cartridges.

The alignment is complete when the Power light stops blinking.
Check the control panel for the blinking lights.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step 4: Replace the problem cartridge

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

The following video demonstrates the steps explained on this page. The outside of the product might look different, but the steps are the same for your product.

Follow these steps in the order given to replace the problem cartridge.

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.
Press down gently on the top of the cartridge to release it from the carriage, and then pull it toward you to remove it.
Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then remove the protective tape from the cartridge.

caution:
Do not touch the cartridge contacts or nozzles.
Place the cartridge in its slot at a slight, upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.
Close the cartridge access door. An alignment page prints within a minute.

Step 5: Align the cartridges

Follow these steps to align the cartridges. If the product does not complete the cartridge alignment, the product will print an alignment page every time you turn on the product.

Open the scanner lid.
Place the alignment page face down on the scanner glass in the lower-left corner.
Close the scanner lid while holding the alignment page in place.
Press the Scan button on the control panel. The product aligns the cartridges.

The alignment is complete when the Power light stops blinking.
Check the control panel for the blinking lights.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power light is blinking

In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinking
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product is processing a print, scan, copy, or maintenance task.

Solutions

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to finish the task

If the product is busy, wait for the product to finish the task.

If the product finishes the task, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product never finishes the task, and the lights continue to blink, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel the task

Press the Cancel button

on the control panel.

If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

Issue: The Power light blinks for three seconds, and then stays on

In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinks faster for three seconds, and then stays on
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product is busy printing, scanning, copying, or performing a maintenance task.

Solutions

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to finish the task

If the product is busy, wait for the product to finish the task.

If the product finishes the task, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product never finishes the task, and the lights continue to blink, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel the task

Press the Cancel button

on the control panel.

If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

Issue: The Power light blinks for 20 seconds, and then stays on

In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinks for 20 seconds, and then stays on
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

You pressed the Scan button and the computer did not respond.

Solutions

Solution one: Restore the connection between the All-in-One and the computer

Follow these steps to make sure that the product is communicating with the computer.

Step 1: Disconnect the USB cable

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.

caution:
Do not disconnect the power cord during this step.
Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.

Step 2: Reconnect the USB cable

Press the Power button to turn off the product.
Reconnect the USB cable to the USB port on the computer. For troubleshooting purposes, do not reconnect to a powered USB hub until after the direct connection to the computer resolves the issue.
Reconnect the USB cable to the product.

note:
The icon on the USB cable generally faces up when the cable is connected correctly.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.

Step 3: Restart the computer

note:
Some of the following solutions require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after restarting the computer.

Select your operating system, and then follow the steps to restart the computer for your operating system.

Macintosh users: skip to the next step.

Windows XP

On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Shut Down.
From the What do you want the computer to do? drop-down list, click Restart, and then click OK.

Windows Vista

On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon

click the Right arrow

, and then click Restart.

Windows 7

On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon

, click the Right arrow

, and then click Restart.

Step 4: Test the All-in-One

Repeat the steps of the print or scan task that caused the original error condition and pattern of blinking lights.
Check the product control panel for the blinking lights.

If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step 5: Replace the USB cable

Securely connect an alternate (new or known-good) USB cable to the product and the computer.

note:
HP supports USB cables less than 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) in length.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the error persists, contact your computer manufacturer or service center to ensure the USB port is set up and working properly.

Solution two: Troubleshoot issues with the All-in-One software

Possible causes for issues with the product software include:

The printer's Full Feature HP software package is not installed on your computer.
The Full Feature HP product software is not configured to recognize the Scan button.
The HP Digital Imaging Monitor service that recognizes the Scan button is not running.

Choose one of the following options:

To troubleshoot product software issues, or to download and run the HP Scanning Diagnostic Utility, click this link, and then follow the steps in the document: A 'No Scan Options' or 'Scan settings are not set' Message Displays on the All-in-One (in English).

note:
Even though you might not have an error message displayed on the computer or the product, the troubleshooting steps and solutions are the same.
For an immediate solution, continue to the workarounds.

Workarounds: Scan from the computer

Rather than pressing the Scan button on the product control panel, try one of these quick workarounds. First, choose your operating system.

Windows XP

Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Scan with Paint

To scan a document using Paint in Windows XP, follow these steps:

note:
Before you begin, make sure that the product is connected to your computer.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Paint.
Click File, and then click From Scanner or Camera.
Make any desired setting changes.
Click Scan.

Scan with HP Solution Center

Perform the following steps if you are unable to scan directly from HP Solution Center in Windows XP.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
Double-click Local Disc (C:).
Double-click Program Files.
Double-click HP.
Double-click Digital Imaging.
Double-click Bin.
Locate and double-click one of the following files. You will only have one to choose from.
- Hpiscnapp.exe
- Hpqscnvw.exe
This will launch the HP Scan application.
Select New Scan, and then change any desired settings to the scan.
Click Accept to save the scan to the desired location.
Follow these steps if you need to save the scan as another file type, such as a .PDF:
1. Right-click the recently saved file to open it in another application, such as Microsoft Word.
2. Save the new scan as the desired file type.

Windows Vista

Use one of the following methods to scan a document for the Windows Vista operating system.

Scan with Windows Photo Gallery

To scan a document using Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

Click the Windows icon , click All Programs, and then click Windows Photo Gallery.
Click File, and then click Import From Camera or Scanner.
Click Import, and then click Scan.

Scan with Paint

To scan a document using Paint in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

Click the Windows icon , click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Paint.

Scan with HP Solution Center

Perform the following steps if you are unable to scan directly from HP Solution Center in Windows Vista.

Make any desired setting changes, and then click Scan.

Issue: The Power, Check Paper, and Check Cartridge lights are blinking

In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinking
Check Paper light: Blinking
Check Cartridge light: Blinking
Size lights: Both Off
Paper Type lights: Both Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product has a scanner failure.

Solutions

Solution one: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the control panel overlay is installed correctly

If the control panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product might indicate a false carriage stall error condition. If the product has not been set up before, ensure correct installation of the control panel overlay by following the instructions.

note:
If you have already installed the control panel overlay, proceed to the next solution.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Locate the control panel overlay, and then peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive.
Lift the scanner lid.
Carefully line up and install the control panel overlay.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Try the task again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power, Size, and Paper Type lights are all on

In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: On
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product is ready to print, scan, copy, or perform a maintenance task.

Solution

Press the appropriate button(s) on the product to perform the intended task.

If the product operates normally, allow the product to complete the task.
If after trying the task, a blinking light or combination of blinking lights displays on the product control panel, find the pattern you are experiencing in this document, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: The Start Copy Black light and Power light are blinking

In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinking
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Blinking
Start Copy Color light: Off

Cause

The product is making a black-and-white copy.

Solutions

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to finish the task

If the product is busy, wait for the product to finish the task.

If the product finishes the task, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product never finishes the task, and the lights continue to blink, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel the task

Press the Cancel button

on the control panel.

If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

Issue: The Start Copy Color light and Power light are blinking

In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Blinking
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Paper Type lights: 1 On, 1 Off
Start Copy Black light: Off
Start Copy Color light: Blinking

Cause

The product is making a color copy.

Solutions

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to finish the task

If the product is busy, wait for the product to finish the task.

If the product finishes the task, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product never finishes the task, and the lights continue to blink, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel the task

Press the Cancel button

on the control panel.

If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button for three seconds to turn off the product.
If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.

With the power on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Press the Power button to turn on the product.
Wait until the Power light stops blinking. The reset is then complete.

Issue: All the lights are off

The following control panel light pattern displays:

Power light: Off
Check Paper light: Off
Check Cartridge light: Off
Size lights: Off
Paper Type lights: Off
Start Copy Black: Off
Start Copy Color: Off

Cause

The product does not turn on.

Solutions

Solution one: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the product and plugged into an electrical outlet.

Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

Press the Power button to turn on the product.

If the product turns on, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the product does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the electrical outlet works

Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Plug another appliance into the electrical outlet to make sure that the outlet works.

If the electrical outlet does not work, plug the product into another outlet that does work.
If the electrical outlet works, but the product still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Make sure that the power supply is compatible with the HP All-in-One

The term power supply refers to both the power module and the power cord.

note:
To make sure your product and power supply are compatible, HP suggests you use the original power supply shipped with your product.

note: The power module might have a permanently attached power cord, or the power cord might detach from the power module. The photographs in the examples might not match your product.

Make sure that the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the power supply match the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the HP product.

In this example, the voltage (+32 V) and the amperage (2000 mA) from the power supply are compatible with the voltage and amperage specified on the HP product.

If the voltage and amperage specifications of the product and the power supply are compatible, make sure that the connector on the power cord is the same shape and size as the connector on the HP product.

warning:
Do not force an incompatible power cord (its plug has a different shape or size than the HP product's electrical connection) into an HP product.

If the power cord is not compatible with the product, replace the power cord with a compatible cord. To buy a compatible cord, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, and then click Open in New Window.
If the power cord is compatible with the product, but the product still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power

The power module has a safety feature that protects the product during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, the power module might need to be reset. Follow these steps to reset the power module.

Step 1: Reset the power module

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
Unplug the power cord from the power module.
Wait 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Plug the power cord back into the power module.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector until after the issue is resolved.

Check to see if the power module has an LED light.

If the power module does not have an LED light, continue to the next step.
If the power module has an LED light, check to see if the LED lights up.

If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, and then click Open in New Window.
If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.

Step two: Test the power on the All-in-One

Follow these steps to test the power on the product.

Press, and then quickly release the Power button to start a power on/off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

If you press and hold the Power button too long, the product might turn on and then turn off without restarting. If this happens, press, and then quickly release the Power button again.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different product

If you have another available power cord that is compatible with your product, use the alternate cord to repeat the steps in Solution three: Reset the power module and test the power.

If the product turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP, to buy a compatible power cord.
If the product does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Service the All-in-One

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
