HP Media Center PCs - Decoder Error: The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed

This document pertains to HP Media Center computers with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
The following error occurs when trying to play movies or Live TV in Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition:
Decoder Error: The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart the Media Center and/or the computer.
This issue occurs if the WinDVD decoder becomes unregistered or corrupted. To resolve the error, uninstall and reinstall Intervideo WinDVD Player software as follows:
  1. Click Start, and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select the Intervideo WinDVD Player software.
  4. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the Intervideo WinDVD Player software and then restart the system.
  6. After the PC restarts, reinstall WinDVD from the application recovery software; click Start, All Programs, PC Help and Tools (or similar), and then Application Recovery.
      note:
    If your PC came with WinDVD and it does not appear in the application recovery program, you can download and install WinDVD version 5 from the Software and Driver download page for your HP or Compaq PC model.
