HP Digital Entertainment Center - Enabling Multi-Channel Sound and Digital Audio

This document pertains to multi-channel sound or digital audio systems and the HP Digital Entertainment Center using Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
note:
Location, availability, and number of connections may vary by model. Additional cables to install the HP Digital Entertainment Center are sold separately.
If you are using a 5.1 (6-channel), 7.1 (8-channel), or digital audio system with the HP Digital Entertainment Center, you must configure the speaker settings and DVD player settings in the Media Center program after you connect the audio equipment.

Step 1: Determining procedures to perform for your system

The following table shows which procedures to perform for your audio system. If you set up speakers using the Media Center Optional Components wizard, then set up the audio for the DVD player only.

Change settings. See Configuring Media Center audio for DVD playback If you use digital audio, the Media Center S/PDIF default setting is on, but the DVD Player S/PDIF default setting is OFF. You must move the DVD S/PDIF default setting to ON to hear all channels in DVD digital audio.

Step 2: Configuring speaker settings (audio) in Media Center

Follow these steps to configure Media Center for multichannel audio output:
  1. Press Media Center on the remote control.
    Or
    You can also click Start on the taskbar and select Media Center.
  2. Click Settings, General, Media Center Setup, and then Set Up Your Speakers. The Speaker Setup screen displays.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Under Specify how many speakers you have, select the speaker number that matches your system. For example, select 5.1. Click Next.
    note:
    If your speaker configuration does not appear in the list, click the Sound Effect speaker icon in the desktop system tray.
  5. Select Test. If you hear tones from all your speakers, click Next. If you do not hear tones from all your speakers, follow the onscreen instructions to resolve the issue.
  6. Click Finish.

Step 3: Configuring Media Center audio for DVD playback

Follow these steps to configure Media Center for multichannel audio output for a DVD player.
  1. Press Media Center on the remote control.

    You can also click Start on the taskbar and select Media Center.
  2. Click Settings, DVD, Audio, and then Speaker Configuration.
  3. Set sound output to match your speaker system. For example, select 5.1. If you have digital audio, select S/PDIF.
  4. Click Save.
