Checking the package contents

  • HP Deskjet 9300 series printer
  • Output tray
  • Power cord
  • Black and color print cartridges
  • Printed documentation (setup poster, getting started guide, HP customer support guide)
  • Starter CD (software and electronic documentation)
Removing the packing materials
Remove all packing tapes from the inside of the printer.
Installing the output tray
  1. Unpack the output tray
  2. Align the guides on the output tray with the grooves on the printer.
  3. Push in to lock the left side of the tray, then the right side.
  4. Lower the tray to its horizontal position.
Connecting the power cord and turning on the printer
  1. Connect the power cord to the printer and an alternating current (AC) power receptacle.
  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  note:
Only connect the printer to the computer once the software installation is complete or when prompted to do so during installation.
Loading paper in main paper tray
Load the printer's main paper tray as follows:
  1. Raise the output tray.
  2. Slide the paper guides to their outmost positions.
  3. Insert up to 150 sheets of paper, print-side down, into the main tray.
  4. Slide the paper guides until they fit snugly against the paper.
  5. Lower the output tray to its horizontal position.
Installing the print cartridges
Use only the recommended print cartridges. Install the cartridges as follows:
  1. Open the printer access cover.
  2. Lift up the print cartridge latches.
  3. Remove the color print cartridge (C6578) from its package, and then remove the protective tape from the print cartridge.
  4. Insert and push the color print cartridge into the left cradle.
  5. Snap the cartridge latch onto the print cartridge.
  6. Repeat Steps 3 to 5 to install the black print cartridge (51645) into the right cradle.
  7. Close the access cover.
  note:
Both print cartridges must be correctly installed for the printer to work. The printer aligns the print cartridges and prints an alignment page. If no alignment page prints, check to ensure there is paper in the tray.
Testing the printer setup
Print the diagnostic page to test that the printer is set up correctly.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Press and hold down the Power button and press the Resume button four times.
  3. Release the Power button.
The printer prints a diagnostic page. If desired, keep this page for future reference.
If the printer does not print, check that the power cord is connected firmly, the print cartridges are properly installed, the top cover of the printer is closed, and the removable panel (located at the printer's back) is tightly pushed into the slot and the knob is in the lock position. Try printing the diagnostic page again. If this still fails, call the nearest HP customer support.
Installing the software and connecting the printer
Insert the Starter CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then follow the appropriate procedure for the operating system and connection (USB or parallel).
  note:
Only connect the printer to the computer once the software installation is complete or when prompted to do so during installation. Also, connect only the cable selected during the installation.
If the printer was connected to the computer before the software was installed, refer to the onscreen user's guide on the Starter CD to complete the printer installation.
Software-first installation (recommended)
  1. Start Windows and make sure no other Windows applications are running.
  2. Insert the Starter CD into the CD-ROM drive. The CD menu runs automatically. If the CD menu does not run automatically, click Start, click Run, and in the command line box type the letter of the computer’s CD-ROM drive followed by :\setup (for example, type D:\setup).
  3. Click Install Printer Driver from the CD menu.
  4. Choose the language and click OK.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. Click Connected directly to this computer, and then click Next.
  7. If using a USB cable, select USB Cable and click Next. If using a parallel cable, select Parallel Cable. From the Ports drop-down list, select the parallel port on which the printer is connected.
      note:
If the setup program detects an existing parallel connection and displays a prompt, choose to install the printer on the port that is detected, if desired. In addition, selecting the Express Install checkbox will install the setup program using default settings.
  8. Click Next and follow the onscreen instructions.
  9. Connect the USB cable or parallel cable to the computer and the printer when prompted. The Found New Hardware Wizard appears on the computer screen and the printer icon is created in the Printers folder.
      note:
Connect only the cable selected in Step 7.
Hardware-first installation
  note:
Before installing the printer software on a computer running Windows XP 64-bit, click here to download the printer software from http://www.hp.com.
If a USB cable is connected to the USB ports on the computer and the printer before the printer software is installed, the Found New Hardware Wizard appears on the computer screen.
If a parallel cable is connected and the system is restarted, the Found New Hardware Wizard appears on the computer screen.
  1. Click Next in the Found New Hardware Wizard.
  2. Click Search for the best driver for the device (recommended), and then click Next.
  3. Insert the Starter CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD menu appears, click Exit twice to close the CD menu.
  4. Select Specify a location.
  5. Click Browse to locate the root directory on the Starter CD, and then click OK.
  6. Click Next and follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. Click Next, and then click Finish.
      note:
Upon completion of the hardware-first installation process, the Found New Hardware Wizard will automatically launch the setup program. This provides the option of installing non-driver components such as the Toolbox.
Testing the software installation
After the software installation is complete and the printer is connected to the computer, print a document from an application used frequently.
Printing a demo page
The demo page is printed from the Toolbox software or from the printer's front panel. Printing a demo page from the Toolbox verifies the printer and cartridge functionality, the computer-to-printer connection, and the driver installation. Printing a demo page from the front panel verifies printer and cartridge functionality but does not verify functionality of the computer to printer connection.
To print a demo page from the Toolbox software, do the following:
  1. Open the Toolbox application.
  2. Select the Printer Services tab.
  3. Click Print a Demo Page.
To print a demo page from the front panel, do the following:
  1. Turn off the printer, and then turn it on again by pressing the Power button.
  2. Press the Resume button and release it when the Resume light turns off. The printer then prints a demo page.
