HP Designjet 10ps and 20ps Printers - App2.exe in MFC42.dll Error When Upgrading to New Software RIP

Introduction
When upgrading from one version of the 10ps/20ps software RIP to a newer version, in some cases the newer version fails to start correctly. This error has been seen in MS Windows 98, NT, 2000, and XP. This occurs in the v 1.2 to v 2.1 upgrade, but may occur with other versions as well.
Current upgrade process
  1. Uninstall the currently installed software RIP from the computer through Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Install the new software RIP from the CD provided.
In some cases, when launching the newly- installed software RIP for the first time, an error is generated regarding an App2.exe error in MFC42.dll. A patch is now available to solve this issue. Click here to download the patch from the HP business support Web site at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?locale=en_US.
    • Select download drivers and software.
    • Select printers.
    • Under HP designjet printers, select HP designjet a3+/b+ graphic printer series.
    • Select the appropriate printer model.
    • Choose the appropriate operating system (OS).
    • Select the download button to download the patch.
    • Follow the download instructions.
Process for applying the patch
  caution:
  • Do not apply this patch unless your installation exhibits this issue!
  • Do not apply this patch without first upgrading the printer firmware (A02.09 as of May 15, 2003). Use the System Maintenance Tool to do this.
  • Apply this patch only to version 2.1 of the HP Designjet 10ps or 20ps Software RIPs. Do not apply this patch to either the HP Designjet 500ps or 120 Software RIPs.
How to apply the patch
  1. Download and unzip the patch if you have not already done so.
  2. Make sure the printer is upgraded to the latest available firmware (A02.09 as of May 15, 2003).
      caution:
Do not apply this patch without first upgrading the printer firmware!
  3. Uninstall the current software version of the RIP, using Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Remove the folder (C:\Program Files\HP Designjet 10ps or 20ps RIP) associated with the RIP.
  5. Restart the computer before you try to install the new version of the RIP.
  6. Install the 2.1 version of the software. After restarting the computer, continue the installation process for the PostScript driver.
  7. After the installation is complete, launch the software to verify the app2.exe error.
  8. Search for the file app2.exe. Once you find it, rename the file to app2.exe_original.
  9. Copy the included file (app2.exe_patched) to the location of the previous one from step 8 and rename it app2.exe.
  10. Launch the software and verify that the RIP starts and runs correctly.
      note:
If you cannot see the extensions of the files in Windows Explorer, you may need to disable the option "Hide Extensions for Known File Types". This can be found under Tools, Folder Options, then View from the Windows Explorer Menu.
