    Information regarding recent vulnerabilities

HP is aware of the recent vulnerabilities commonly referred to as "Spectre" and "Meltdown". HP has published a security bulletin with patches for these issues and a list of impacted systems. We will continue to update the bulletin as more information becomes available and encourage customers to check the bulletin frequently.

HP Designjet 50ps Printer - Optimizing Server System Performance

Introduction
The following information can enhance the performance of the system:
Changes to the server's operating system
  • Set the virtual memory of the operating system to a permanent value (Control Panel > System > Performance). The virtual memory should be greater than the RAM physically installed.
  • If possible, move this virtual memory to a second physical hard disk.
  • Make sure that your network is configured in the best possible manner.
  • Consult Microsoft for further assistance with optimizing the operating system.
Information regarding the hardware
  • Increase the installed RAM to at least 512 MB.
  • Make sure that you are using the best possible drivers for your hard disks. Consult the manufacturer of the hard disks for further information and updates. Be sure to install the manufacturer's drivers.
  • If possible, use fast hard disks with an optimum data rate (the modern SCSI systems in particular provide a very high performance).
  • If possible, use two (or more) physical disks. The optimum solution is to assign the HP Designjet 50ps PrintManager, the virtual memory (see above), the spool file in the HP Designjet 50ps EngineManager and the PDF export directory separate physical disks.
Optimizing the RIP software
Compression
Whether or not compression should be used depends on the performance of the server and of the network and on the type of jobs:
  • If the server is fitted with a powerful CPU but the network or the bus system of the server is rather slow, it is recommended to use compression.
  • If the server components are relatively fast (like, for example, modern SCSI hard disks) but the CPU is not very powerful, compression should not be used as it may turn into a disadvantage in this case.
  • Jobs with large monochrome portions can be optimally compressed.
  • If the jobs to be printed often include complicated jobs with a high portion of images, compression should be disabled because it is not very effective and takes long due to the amount of data involved.
Use of the spool file
  • Depending on the paper and print quality and on the hardware used, it may be useful to enable or disable the spool file.
  • For a high print quality (= printing takes long) and/or a slow network: Enable the spool file.
  • For a slow storage medium (one hard disk only, no optimization as described above): Disable the spool file.
Limit the number of virtual printers
It is recommended that no more than 20 virtual printers be configured at one time. The RIP needs to monitor all of the HotFolders for all of the Virtual Printers. The more virtual printers that are configured, the more resources are needed to monitor them.
For more details on compression and on the spool file, refer to the online help of the HP Designjet 50ps EngineManager.
