HP Designjet Printers - How to Copy Firmware Using FTP on a Network

Introduction

This document explains how to use the FTP command to copy a file (firmware updates) to a printer that is connected over a network. Use this method if the System Maintenance tool does not work.

Download firmware update

Follow these steps to check for the latest firmware updates for your printer using the HP website.
  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer, either through your local network or a USB cable.
  2. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.
    The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.
  3. If you need to change the version of Windows, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
  4. Click Firmware, and then click Download.
    If a Firmware section is not listed, an update is not currently available for your printer.
  5. Save the file to your computer.
  6. Locate and then open the file to start the installation process.

FTP command

The following solution will work on most networks. Use the FTP command as follows:
  1. Enter a DOS prompt:
    1. On the computer desktop, click Start, Run.
    2. In the command line, type in cmd and click OK.
  2. Go to the directory where the file is located (make sure that the file is decompressed and not in a .zip format).
  3. Type the following command: ftp (IP address) *Where the IP address is the network address of the plotter.
  4. At the prompt for a login, press ENTER to bypass.
  5. At the prompt for a password, press ENTER to bypass.
  6. At the ftp> prompt, type the following command: put (filename and extension). *Where filename is the name of the file to be copied.
