HP Designjet 500 and 800 Series Printers - Cutter not Working, or System Error 86:10 Appears on the Front Panel

Issue:
The carriage attempts to pick up the cutter but is unable to pull the cutter across the media path. The printer may also display system error 86:10 on the front panel.
Solution
Follow the steps below to ensure the Cutter guide and Cutter assembly are correctly positioned:
  1. Turn the printer Off.
  2. Open the Top cover.
  3. Ensure that the Cutter guide is snapped down correctly as in Figure 1 below (the guide should be level with, or slightly lower than the black platen).

  4. If the guide is raised, firmly push the left side of the guide down until the guide snaps into place.
  5. Carefully reach under the left side cover and pull the Cutter assembly out towards the right side of the printer where the cut out for removal is located (see Figure 2).

  6. Using both hands, gently pull the Cutter assembly towards you and up (releasing the cutter assembly from the guide).
  7. Remove and reattach the Cutter assembly. Ensure Cutter is latched correctly (see Figure 3).

  8. Push the Cutter assembly down, into place (see Figure 4).

  9. Manually move the Cutter assembly back into home position, underneath the left side cover.
  10. Close the Top cover.
  11. Turn the printer On.
  12. Send a test print to verify printer functionality.
