HP Designjet 5000 Series Printers - General Printhead Guidelines

Information

This document contains frequently asked questions about HP Designjet printheads.

How long do printheads last?

The warranty period for the printheads is 1000 cc of ink through the printhead (previously 700 cc), or the expiration date printed on the printhead, whichever comes first. However, printheads may last much longer than 1000 cc of ink. On average, printheads should last through 2-3 ink cartridges.

How will I know when to replace my printheads?

Printheads will eventually wear out. The smart chip inside the printhead monitors printheads and advises users when a printhead needs replacing (for certain types of failures). For other types of failures, users should replace the printheads when the image quality begins to fall below their needs.

Are there any guidelines that recommend, for instance “one printhead for every two cartridges“?

No, there is no guideline. It really depends upon how you are using the printer, and what your quality threshold is.

Can I refill my ink cartridges?

No. HP does not recommend or support refilled ink systems. The ink cartridges are not designed to be refilled, and will most likely not work properly if refilled. Smart chips are unable to detect refilled ink in the cartridges. Also use of non-HP inks may affect image quality, and may not be compatible with other inks used. Damage to the printer, printhead, printhead cleaner, or ink cartridge resulting from modifying, refilling, or mixing inks with the HP Designjet printers is not the responsibility of Hewlett-Packard.
