HP Designjet 1000 Series Printers - Garbled Text Appears on the Front Panel Display

Issue:
Garbled text appears on the printer's front panel display.
Cause
Garbled text appears on the printer's front panel display when the printer receives a corrupt instruction or when a logic component is defective. Causes can be poorly seated or defective DIMMs, defective or poorly seated IO devices, poorly seated cables or a defective component or subassembly that processes data.
SOLUTION: The follow steps may remedy this issue.
  1. Turn off the printer using the power switch located on the back of the printer.
  2. Disconnect all data cables (for example network and/or parallel).
  3. Remove and reseat all DIMM's installed in the back of the printer.
  4. Turn the printer on and check the front panel display. If the garbled text persists, continue with the remaining steps.
  5. If the printer has two memory DIMM's installed, try powering up with one memory DIMM installed at a time, to rule out a possibly defective memory DIMM. If the printer only has one memory DIMM installed, try installing that DIMM into the other memory slot.
      caution:
Turn the printer off and unplug the power cable before removing and/or installing any of the DIMM(s).
    • C6074A and C6075A (original HP Designjet 1000 Series), the memory DIMM locations are the first and second slots, from left to right, when facing the back of the printer.
    • C6074B and C6075B (HP Designjet 1000 Series plus models), the memory DIMM locations are the second and third slots, from left to right, when facing the back of the printer.
  6. After following the scenarios above, attempt to verify functionality. Continue with the remaining steps if problems persist.
  7. Turn off the printer and remove the HP Jetdirect card (if installed). Turn on and re-check. If no error, turn the printer off, re-install the Jetdirect card and try again. If the printer works without the Jetdirect card installed, the problem most likely resides with the card. Continue with the remaining steps if the problem continues.
  8. Turn the printer off and remove the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Model C6075B (1055 Plus) has an internal HDD and cannot be removed by the customer. Turn on and re-check. If no error, turn the printer off and re-install the HDD and try again. If the printer works without the HDD installed, the problem most likely resides with the HDD. Continue with the remaining steps if the problem continues.
  9. Replace the firmware and/or memory, and then re-check if the same garbled text is displayed. Defective firmware can be a likely cause of this issue. Try to send replacement firmware to prevent a service call if printer is under a warranty/supportpack/contract or if customer has firmware less than A.01.06a (see bpp03570 for details on sending firmware for free).
