HP Designjet Printers - HP-GL/2 Driver Properties Tabs Not Displayed in English

Issue:
When viewing the HPGL/2 driver properties tabs from the printer folder or from within an application, the tabs are displayed in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, German, Italian, Cyrillic, or in symbols. This problem occurs in both older and newer versions of the HP-GL/2 driver.
Issues seen with incorrect tabs in the driver:
Older driver versions (i.e. 5.35):
  • Printing Preferences tabs may appear in Spanish, or other languages
Newer driver version (i.e 6.03):
  • Security Tab may be missing in the Printer's Properties and/or the wrong fonts on the About and Paper Standards Tabs
note:
This is usually seen with Windows XP or 2000, when a USB connection is being used. The problem rarely occurs in combination with a Windows 98 operating system and a Parallel connection.
Solution
Reinstall the Designjet driver. Follow the appropriate section below (USB or Parallel) for the connection type being used.
USB reinstallation process:
  1. Unplug the USB cable from the printer.
  2. Empty the print Queue of all documents (Cancel all documents).
    note:
If either of the first two steps are missed you may get and error stating that the driver files are in use when you go to remove them from the Server Properties. If you still get the error you can remove the files after you reboot (also check for multiple icons in the Printers & Faxes window). If unable to get past this message, follow the manual removal instructions below.
  3. Delete the Printer Icon from the Printer (and Faxes) window.
  4. Remove the driver files from the Drivers tab in the Server Properties.
Upper left corner of window: File, Server Properties, Drivers Tab, select the driver and click Remove.
  5. Reboot the computer.
  6. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the driver from the Installation CD-ROM.
CDROM drive:\program files\Hewlett-Packard\DesignJet\500-800 Series\drivers\HPGL2\2K-XP\en\Dsgj800.inf Example is for the Designjet 800 (or 500 with HPGL-2 card) on a Windows XP system.
    note:
You can also download and install the latest driver from www.designjet.hp.com.
  7. Delete the new printer Icon (just the icon) from the printers window.
    note:
When you plug the USB cable in (step below) and the printer is detected, the printer will be installed a second time, unless you chose the matching Virtual Printer Port and physical USB Port. Since this is rarely the case, you will need to delete the original printer icon and rename the second (to remove 'Copy 1'). It is much quicker to just delete the Icon first and use the one your OS installs during detection. When done this way it will not matter what Port selected during the installation, (LPT1, USB, or other) it will install itself on the correct USB Printer Port.
  8. Plug the USB cable back into the printer.
The printer will be Auto Detected and install with all tabs present and in English.
Parallel reinstallation process:
  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Unplug the parallel cable.
  4. Delete the Printer Icon from the Printer (and Faxes) window.
  5. Remove the driver files from the Drivers tab in the Server Properties.
Upper left corner of window: File, Server Properties, Drivers Tab, select the driver and click Remove.
  6. Reboot the PC, while plugging the Parallel cable in during the process.
The printer will be detected on LPT1 during initialization.
    note:
    Choose LPT1 during installation.
  7. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the driver from the setup software Installation CD-ROM.
The printer is now ready to use, and the driver tabs should appear in the correct language.
Windows 2000, NT, and XP
In Microsoft Windows 2000, NT and XP, the drivers must be deleted from the Printers folder and the Drivers tab (located in Server Properties). To access the Drivers tab from the Printers window:
  1. Select Start, Settings, then Printers.
  2. On the top menu bar, select File, Server Properties, and then select the Drivers tab.
  3. In the Drivers tab, highlight the appropriate Designjet printer (and any duplicates of that driver) and select Remove.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Reinstall the driver (cancel the new hardware wizard and/or the CD Autorun feature and install using Add Printer located in the Printers folder).
If USB connection is being used, follow the additional steps below:
    note:
Leave the printer connected to the USB cable during the steps below.
    1. Reboot computer and unplug the USB cable from the computer during the reboot.
    2. Install the driver from the CD-ROM to LPT1 (should install in English).
      note:
Do not connect printer to the LPT1 port.
    3. Reboot the computer again and plug in the USB cable during the reboot process.
    4. The computer will now recognize the new hardware on the USB port.
    5. Install the driver on the USB port using the new hardware wizard (will create copy1 of the driver, also in English)
    6. Delete the driver created for LPT1.
    7. Driver for USB port will now be in English.
note:
If the process above does not fully uninstall the driver, follow the manual uninstall process for Windows 9X listed below.
Manual driver removal:
In Windows 9X, the files must be manually deleted as detailed below.
  1. Print a Windows test page from the General tab within the Printer Properties.
The test page will contain the following files:
    Driver files
    Windows NT and Windows 2000
    Windows 9X
    HPGLRTL2.HLP
    HPGLRTL2.DRV
    HPGLRTL2.HPM
    HPLTUI.DLL
    HPGLRTL3.HLP
    HPGLRTL2.HLP
    HPGLRTL4.HPM
    HPGLRTL3.HLP
    HPGLRTL8.HPM
    HPGLRTL2.HPM
    HPLTCAL4.DLL
    HPGLRTL4.HPM
    HPLTCOL1.EXE
    HPGLRTL8.HPM
    HPLTDRV1.DLL
    HPGLCAL4.DLL
    HPLTLNK.EXE
    HPLOTCHG.EXE
    HPLTSAM1.SPL
    HPLTLNK.EXE
    HPLTSAM2.SPL
    HPLTUI.DLL
    HPLTUINT.DLL
    HPLTUMPD.DLL
  2. Turn off the power to the PC. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the power back on.
  3. Delete the HP Designjet Printer icon associated with this language issue by clicking Start, Setting, then Printer. Highlight the specific HP Designjet Printer icon and press the Delete key on the keyboard.
  4. Click Start, Find, Search, then click Files or Folders. Manually delete all the files listed on the Windows test page.
  5. Access the control panel and double click Administrative tools.
  6. Double click services, scroll down to Print Spooler and highlight that line.
  7. Click actions then Stop.
  8. With Print Spooler still highlighted, click Actions again and then Start.
  9. Close the Services window and retry removing the drivers from Server Properties.
    note:
Unless a network cable is connected and shared drivers are still accessing the spooler the files should delete.
  10. If unable to delete and reinstall the driver at this point, continue with the remaining steps.
  11. Click Start, then Run. Type REGEDIT and click OK.
  12. Click File, Export Registry File, name it HP and then click OK.
  13. In the Find window, uncheck the boxes associated with Values and Data, then type each file name and search for each individually. Delete any found HP Designjet files.
  14. Turn the power to the PC off, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power to the PC back on.
  15. Download the latest driver from the HP Software and Drivers page.
  16. Install the driver as a local printer on LPT1, and ensure that the install language is set to the appropriate language.
    note:
If the issue is not corrected, repeat Steps 1 - 9, and reinstall the driver for a network printer.
note:
If the issue persists following all the steps as outlined above, check to see if there is more than one user under a different logon with the same driver loaded. If so, remove the driver from all seperate logons to fully eliminate the driver and the driver should reinstall correctly.
