HP Designjet 500ps Printers - Setup, Installing, and Uninstalling Software RIP in Microsoft Windows NT, and 2000

The following information provides instructions regarding how to install and setup the HP Designjet 500ps software RIP in Windows NT and 2000.

Install the generic text driver

Loading of the generic text driver before the software RIP eliminates several possible errors that can occur during the software RIP installation.
  1. Go to the Printer window.
  2. Select Add a Printer.
  3. Scroll down to Manufacture = Generic, Printer = Generic/Text Only.
  4. Select the port type: USB, LPT1, or the network port.
  5. Continue with the RIP installation as outlined below.

RIP installation

  1. Insert the installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. From the CD Setup window, select the language of the installer and click Next.
  3. Select the correct language of the software to install, and click Next.
  4. The system will display the License Agreement window. After reading the agreement, click Yes to accept.
  5. When the Welcome window displays, click Next.
  6. When the Program folder appears, select the folder in which to display the appropriate software (for instance, HP Designjet 500PS), and click Next.
  7. Select the destination by selecting Browse and selecting a location, or simply accept the default location, then click Next.
The Clear Preferences window will display, if the printer software is currently installed, click Yes to delete preference settings on the system or click No to retain the old preference settings.
  8. Click OK to restart the computer. This will create a desktop icon.

Setting up the RIP software

This software will automatically launch in Windows 2000. If it does not, begin at Step 1.
  1. Double-click the DJ500PS desktop icon.
  2. Click Setup.
  3. Click Change Setup.
  4. Select the printer model and click Next.
  5. Select the port type: USB, LPT1, or the network port.
  6. Click Finished.
  7. The system will restart the computer (Windows NT 4.0 only). Windows 2000 will not restart the computer (not necessary in Windows 2000 OS).
The appropriate 42-inch or 24-inch driver will appear in the Printers window.
  8. Following the restart, go to the software RIP desktop icon and do the following:
    1. Right-click on the icon, select Edit, then Preferences.
    2. Select Generic/Text only.
Adding the generic text driver is an important step. This driver has files the RIP uses. Open and close this driver once after installation.

Installing the Adobe PostScript driver

This is an automatic install and will begin during the RIP software setup.
  1. After reading the License agreement, click Yes to accept.
  2. When the Adobe PS Driver Setup displays, click Next.
  3. When the Install Setup Program appears, click Next.
  4. Select Local Printer, then click Next.
  5. With the Setup RIP CD-ROM in the computer, select Browse from the Select Printer Model box.
  6. Go to the CD-ROM drive, then to the PPD folder (NT 4.0 only).
  7. The HP Designjet 500ps 24 and 42 printer models will appear in the list. Select the printer model, then click Next (NT 4.0 only).
  8. The Shared printer information window will display. Select Shared or Not Shared, depending on the environment, then click Next.
  9. The Printer Name window will display. Select No to set this as the default printer.
  10. Select No to print a test page, and then click Next.
  11. Click Install.

Printing a test page

  1. Click Start, Settings, and then Printers.
  2. Right-click DJ 500 42 or 24 driver.
  3. Go into the Properties, check the port setting on the Details tab.
  4. If the correct port is established, go to the General tab and select Print Test Page.
This page will spool through the RIP software, and print to the printer. Open the RIP software desktop icon, to view the print job.
