HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - Performing the Accuracy Calibration

Introduction

The printer was calibrated at the factory to ensure that it operates with the greatest accuracy in normal environmental conditions. If operating under significantly different conditions, it may be necessary to recalibrate the printer. Click here to go to the printer’s environmental specifications.
It may also be necessary to recalibrate the printer if there are image quality problems. To verify that there are image quality problems always print the Print Quality Test Print by simultaneously pressing the front panel keys Form Feed and Media Source. If an Accuracy Calibration is required follow the procedure below.

Performing the Accuracy Calibration

To perform the accuracy calibration, the printer must be in Service Mode 2. To enter Service Mode 2:
  1. Hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and turn on the printer.
  2. Continue to hold the MEDIA SOURCE key until the LED's on the front panel begin sequencing.
  3. Release MEDIA SOURCE key.
If recalibrating for a non-standard media type, use that type of media. Otherwise use only HP-Matte Film. Plastic-based media is more dimensionally stable than paper-based media. The media must be either an E/A0 or D/A1 size sheet.
  1. Set the media type to Sheet.
  2. Load the sheet face down in portrait orientation.
  3. Select Coated as the media type on the front panel.
  4. Let the media stabilize at the ambient temperature and humidity of the printer for 10 minutes.
  5. To recalibrate, press the REPRINT key on the front panel.
  6. Remove the calibration print when completed. The print will have large arrows on one side, and a dotted line across it.

  7. When the ink is dry, cut the sheet along the dotted line and rotate it 90 degrees counterclock-wise
  8. Reload it printed-side down. The black arrows will go into the printer first as shown in the figure above.
When the recalibration procedure is finished the printer will eject the sheet.
