HP Designjet 500 Series Printers - Troubleshooting the HP-GL/2 Accessory Card

Issue:
Troubleshooting the HP-GL/2 Accessory card.
Solution
In certain circumstances the LEDs located in the formatter or HP-GL/2 Accessory card can help to highlight certain failures. There are three LEDs: Red, Yellow, and Green. Different combinations can indicate different problems.
  • The yellow LED (normally flashing) indicates that the Formatter/Accessory card is working. If it stops flashing, the Formatter/Accessory card has failed and should be replaced.
  • The green LED indicates power is being supplied to the Formatter/Accessory card. If the green LED is not lit and the LED in the Power Switch is ON, that could mean the Formatter/Accessory card is making a bad connection and should be reseated. If reseating the Formatter/Accessory card does not resolve the issue, try the following:
    1. Turn the power to the printer ON, remove the Formatter/Accessory card, but leave the LAN card (if available) installed. Turn the power to the printer back ON. If the printer powers up correctly and the LAN card works properly, go to Step 2. If the LAN card does not work properly, proceed to Step 3.
    2. Turn the power to the printer OFF and remove the LAN card from the current slot and install the Formatter/Accessory card in that slot. Turn the power to the printer back ON and check if the green LED on the Formatter/Accessory card is lit. If the green LED is not lit, the Formatter/Accessory card is faulty and should be replaced. If the green LED is lit, turn the power to the printer OFF, install the LAN card in the vacant slot. Turn the power to the printer back ON and check if the LAN card works properly. If the LAN card does not work there is a problem with the Electronics Module and should be replaced.
    3. Turn the power to the printer OFF and remove the LAN card. Turn the power to the printer back ON. If the printer initializes correctly, the problem could be with the Electronics Module and should be replaced.
    4. If the printer does not power up (nothing appears on the front panel display and the LED in the Power Switch is not flashing) without the LAN card or the Formatter/Accessory card installed, but the Power Switch LED is lit continuously, the problem could be with the Electronics Module or the Power Supply Unit.
  • The red LED will flash several times when power to the printer is turned ON. If the red LED stays lit continuously, or flashes continuously, it is indicating that the Formatter/Accessory Card is faulty and should be replaced.
Additional HPGL/2 Accessory card troubleshooting
Follow the steps below:
  1. If using a parallel cable, verify that the cable is less than three meters long and is IEEE-1284 compliant.
  2. Unplug the printer, remove the HP-GL/2 Accessory card, remove any added memory from the HP-GL/2 Accessory card, and reinstall the HP-GL/2 Accessory card.
  3. Load paper into the printer.
  4. Highlight Printer Information in the printer’s Setup menu and press ENTER.
  5. If the HP-GL/2 Accessory card was detected, View and Print will be displayed; select Print. In a few minutes the printer will print the Service Print. The Service Print will only print if the HP-GL/2 Accessory card is installed and functioning.
  6. If unable to print the Service Print, remove the HP-GL/2 Accessory card and reinstall it in the next slot. If the LAN card is installed, simply swap the two cards. Follow Steps 3 and 4 again.
  7. If the above steps fail to resolve the issue, the HP-GL/2 Accessory card may need to be replaced.
