HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP - How to Install an LPR Port for the Fiery RIP in Windows XP, 2000 and NT 4.0
Issue:
How to install an LPR (Line Print Remote) port for the Fiery RIP in Windows XP, 2000 and NT 4.0.
Preliminary Notes:
- Although XP has shown to be compatible with Fiery operation, this operating system is not supported.
- LPR allows for the assignment of queues necessary for Fiery operation when using these operating systems.
- The Operating System CD-ROM will be required to install LPR services.
note:The error Unable to communicate to IP xxxxxxxx can occur when the LPR port is not set up on a Windows 2000 system. Install LPR port as instructed below.
Solution
To install a port, follow the steps below:

Right-click the driver and go to Properties.

Go to the Ports tab and select Add Port. The Printer Ports window will open as shown below.Figure : Printer ports window

Select LPR Port and click New Port. The Add LPR compatible printer window will open as shown below.
note:
If LPR Port is not a selection, the LPR port must be created. See section titled "Installing LPR services" (listed below) for instructions.Figure : Add LPR compatible printer window -
Type in the IP address of the printer and print_djcp or hold_djcp as the name of the queue. Press OK and close the PrinterPorts window. Press Apply in the Properties window.

Print a test page to verify the port has been set up.Installing LPR services
note:
The Operating System CD-ROM is required to install LPR services.-
On the computer, select Start, Settings, Control panel.

Double-click the Add and Remove Programs icon.

Select Add and Remove Windows Components.

Put a check mark in the option "Other network File and Print Services" and select Details.Figure : Window Component Wizard

Put a check mark in "Print Services for Unix" and select OK.

Select Next.

When prompted, select Finish to complete the installation of the service.
note:
LPR services will now be activated, the computer does NOT need to be rebooted.
