HP Designjet 500PS Printer - Mac OS: Installing and Unistalling the Printer Software

Considering system requirements
Macintosh minimum system requirements for the HP Designjet 500PS 24 inch or 42 inch models
  • Power Macintosh 166 MHz (G3 or G4 400 MHz preferred)
  • Macintosh OS versions: 8.5, 8.6, or 9.0 (9.04 preferred)
  • 64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM or greater preferred)
  • 500 MB free on hard disk (1 GB or greater free on 20 GB hard disk preferred)
  • Printer firmware A.02.01 or later
      note:
To check the firmware version, go to the printer display panel Enter Setup-Menu > Printer Information > View > Engine firmware A.02.01.
Use System Maintenance to Upgrade Firmware
The follow directions can be used to download the latest firmware version.
Click here to download the System Maintenance Utility from HP at http://www.Designjet.hp.com/PreSalesHome.html?ticket=UHLDTpwei7&pageseq=66783596. Use the following path to access and download the utility from the web:
  1. From the main page, select technical support from the left-navigation bar.
  2. Select the appropriate 500 series printer.
  3. Select system maintenance (listed under self support).
  4. To download, click System Software under the appropriate Operating System (OS).
Preparing for installation
When printing via a Jetdirect network card the idle-timeout must be altered from the default of 90 or 120secs to 600secs. This can be done in two different ways:
  • From the printer front panel, enter Setup-Menu > I/O Setup > Card Setup > Configuration > CFG NETWORK=YES > CFG TCP/IP=YES > TIMEOUT=600
  • For 610n cards, enter the IP address in a Web Browser, click Networking Button > TCP/IP button > Idle Timeout=600
Installing the RIP software
The installation program used for the 500PS RIP is a common installation package widely used in Macintosh environments.
Install RIP Software according to these instructions.
  1. Insert the CD.
    • Open the CD and click on it if the installation software is not automatically launched.
    • A message should appear, "RIP Software for the HP Designjet 500PS Large-Format Printer."
  2. Follow the steps to choose the location to store the RIP and wait until the operation has finished.
  3. Remember to install the Adobe (R) PostScript (R) driver if you have not already done so. This is important since this driver will allow creating PostScript data from whatever application. Then this PostScript data can be sent to the 500PS Software RIP.
Configuring the RIP software
The first time you launch the RIP, you will have to configure it:
  1. Configure the appropriate model (Figure 1).
Figure : Configure the appropriate model
  2. Configure the correct connection type for your printer (Figure 2). If you are not using an Ethernet connection, configure the USB connection at this stage.
Figure : Configure the IP address or name
If you are using an HP Jetdirect print server, either:
    • Set up the IP address, or
    • Select the AppleTalk name that identifies the network card of the printer.
      note:
In order to know which TCP/IP or AppleTalk name the printer has, go to the front panel and enter: Setup-Menu > Printer Information > View >
You will be able to change that configuration at any time by going to the Setup properties > Port menu of the 500PS Software RIP.
Configuring the Macintosh (Mac OS 9)
Virtual memory and the RIP software size will need to be configured before printing.
  1. Set Virtual Memory to an amount generally equal to 150% of System RAM (for instance 220 MB based on 128 MB of System RAM)
      note:
To set virtual memory click the Apple icon > Control Panel > Memory. Restart the Mac for the setting to take effect.
  2. Click ‘Macintosh HD’ > HP Designjet 500PS > Program > RIP Engine (or wherever you have placed the Software RIP). With the RIP Engine highlighted, hold down APPLE + I, pull down menu from GeneralInformation to Memory, adjust Minimum and Preferred Size to 60000 thousand or 70000 thousand. This figure can be adjusted depending on system requirements and application file size.
Understanding memory usage
Some samples of memory usage are included below. These figures will vary depending on Mac memory, available memory, RIP Engine and Virtual Memory. It is important the RIP never goes to a 1 MB free memory. That information is available at the bottom of the main RIP window (Figure 3).
The application free memory will decrease when the printer is processing or ripping. If the printer hangs for a while and the “Free Memory” is 1 M, the system does not have enough memory to handle that file and slower virtual memory is being used.
Figure : Application free memory
Understanding length of processing time
What follows is an ‘indication’ of the time taken for the PS file to be printed once it has reached the RIP software. This does not include the time taken for the application to generate the print file nor does it include any time utilized by the application. These samples were printed across a 100 MB full-duplex switched network (medium traffic load) using a Jetdirect network card. In some cases the use of the USB connection has improved efficiency.
With other files and other configuration that time may vary substantially. You can use this result in order to check if everything is configured properly. An A3 test print should take approximately two minutes based on the system mentioned in the system requirements at the beginning of this document. See the Figure 4 below for typical configuration.

Resolving error -8925
When trying to print to the HP Designjet 500PS printer, an error message is displayed on the screen of the Macintosh indicating that an 8925 error has occurred.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps.
  1. Restart the Macintosh.
  2. Look in Trash for an item named 'Am_<printer name>'.
  3. Delete 'Am_<printer name>' from Trash by emptying the Trash.
  4. Launch the RIP.
  5. Go to the Chooser and set up to the RIP 'Am_<printer name>' (Use the name specified for the printer.)
  6. The printer should now print without the -8925 error.
Understanding RIP Port selections on a Macintosh
When connecting to the HP Designjet 500PS printer with a Macintosh, there are four Port selections that can be selected in the RIP software.
USB
The system displays a list of printers connected to the USB port.
AppleTalk
The system displays a list of LaserWriter device types connected on the network. This option is available if the printer has an HP Jetdirect network card installed (The name selected from the RIP should read, "Designjet 500PS:LaserWriter.").
TCP/IP
An IP address must be entered for the printer. This option is available if the printer has an HP Jetdirect network card installed. An IP address can be assigned using the Front Control Panel of the printer. The default IP address is 192.0.0.192 and usually is changed to a unique IP address based on network requirements.
File
The File option behaves like a save-to-file option. Instead of sending data out through a port on the computer, the File option writes data to a file and saves it to a specified location as a .prt file. Use the File selection to transfer files to another computer, or to troubleshoot a specific output device.
Uninstalling RIP software
This section describes how to uninstall HP Designjet 500PS RIP Software from a Macintosh. This information may also be found in the "help.pdf" file that installed with HP Designjet 500PS RIP software on the Macintosh hard drive.
Uninstalling the HP Designjet 500PS RIP software from a Macintosh system may be accomplished as follows:
  1. Quit the RIP software, if it is still open.
  2. Drag the RIP software folder to the Trash.
  3. Open the System folder.
  4. Open the Preferences folder.
  5. Drag the files named HP Designjet 500PS Preferences' and HP Designjet 500PS Prefs to the Trash.
  6. Locate and open the Extensions folder.
  7. Drag the spooler file into the Trash. (The spooler file appears as Am_<printer name>, depending on the setup name you specified for the printer.)
  8. Open the PrinterDescriptions folder.
  9. Drag the PPD files called HP500P24.PPD and HP500P42.PPD to the Trash.
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Empty the Trash. (Hold down the OPTION key while you empty the Trash.)
The software is now uninstalled.
Printing from a client Mac to another Mac working us a server
When printing from a client Mac to another Mac running the Designjet 500PS RIP Software, print jobs go into the DesktopPrintMonitor and stop at Starting Job. The Macintosh computer, acting as the server, may or may not exhibit this behavior.
Enable the DesktopPrintingExtensions on the Mac that acts as the RIP server. While not absolutely necessary to print locally, these extensions are required to allow other Macs to print through the Macintosh that is acting as the RIP server.
