HP Designjet 455CA Printer - Macintosh RIP Software and Mac OS v 8.5 or LaserWriter 8.6 Driver Not Printing

Issue:
Users of the HP Designjet 455CA printer may encounter difficulties when trying to set up the software RIP on Macintosh OS 8.5 and newer. The Chooser will timeout and not properly setup the driver to the RIP software using the HP LaserWriter v8.6.x drivers and newer.
Solution
A software solution has been developed to solve this issue. Please follow the steps below.
  1. Obtain a driver patch from HP Customer Care. Click here to find the nearest HP Customer Care Center.
  2. Uncompress the file after obtaining it from the HP Customer Care Center.
  3. Start the new Mac OS 8.5 patcher program.
  4. Choose Patch for PosterJet. (See the note below)
  5. Choose OK.
  6. Restart the Macintosh computer when requested.
      note:
    Even though the selection says “PosterJet”, the patch is the correct one for the HP Designjet 455CA and has been tested by HP. The ‘Patch for PosterJet’ selection is more compatible with the RIP software than the ‘Apple Default’ selection.
If the HP LaserWriter 8 driver is able to automatically setup to the RIP, then the patch was successful. Prior to running the patch, the HP LaserWriter v8 driver was not able to setup to the RIP software.
Workaround
Follow these steps:
  1. Remove the following files from the System Folder,Extensions Folder:
    • LaserWriter 8
    • Printinglib
  2. Place these two files in the Extensions Disabled Folder and install the HP LaserWriter v8.5.1 from the HP Designjet 455CA RIP CD.
  3. Select HP LaserWriter v8.5.1 driver in the Chooser.
Summary
The RIP software will not set up correctly with the HP LaserWriter v 8.6 driver installed with Macintosh OS 8.5. The “Printer Info” screen in the Chooser will display question marks after each field listed. Manually selecting a PPD will appear to work, however selecting Printer Info under the Setup or Create button will reveal question marks rather than values for each field listed. An 8993 error may be received when attempting to print.

After installing the patch, the “Printer info” screen will now display values after the fields listed. The values also indicate the driver is communicating with the Software RIP, thus able to send print jobs to the RIP.

This issue only affects the Macintosh running the RIP software. A Macintosh using OS 8.5 and HP LaserWriter v 8.6 will print successfully to a RIP installed on another (server) Macintosh.
