HP LaserJet 3100 Series Product - Blank Control Panel Display

Issue:
The display on the control panel of the HP LaserJet 3100 series product is blank and both the Ready and Error lights are lit.
Solution
Perform the following in the order provided:
Performing a standard reset
  1. Unplug the power cord from the unit.
  2. Press and hold the STOP/CLEAR key on the front control panel for seven to ten seconds while plugging the power cord back into the unit. If the unit displays Boot ROM 10/10/97 ready for download, update the firmware.
  3. If the control panel is still blank go to the next troubleshooting step Firmware/BIOS Upgrade with Automatic Firmware Installer.

  note:
To update the firmware, the HP LaserJet 3100 series product must be connected to the computer using a parallel cable.
This section lists the steps to download the firmware to the computer and start the installation process:
  1. On the computer, save all work and quit any open programs.
  2. Download the firmware file from the HP Web site and run the self-extracting utility (execute the downloaded firmware file).
    1. Select the HP LaserJet Firmware and Installer file under the applicable operating system.
        note:
      The firmware installer is only available for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 operating systems.
    2. Click the Download Now button. This will download the file to a temporary default directory on the PC.
        note:
      Note the directory and path where the file is saved in order to access this file on the PC.
    3. To expand (unzip) this file select Start, then Run on the PC. Click the Browse button and locate the directory the file was saved to. Highlight the file, select Open, then OK.
    4. In the next dialog box, change the extraction directory before proceeding, if necessary. The default setting is recommended.
    5. Select the Unzip button to begin file extraction. When file extraction is completed, select OK.
    6. Installation will begin automatically follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. After installation is complete it will be necessary to reconfigure the printer using either the HP JetSuite desktop software or the control panel of the product.
  4. If the automatic update process is not successful, go to the next troubleshooting step Manually Flashing the Firmware.
Manually installing the firmware
The firmware installation consists of four parts with instructions found in these sections below:
Downloading the firmware file
  1. Select the firmware file under the applicable operating system.
  2. Click the Download Now button. This will download the file to a temporary default directory on the PC.
      note:
    Note the directory and path where the file is saved.
  3. To expand (unzip) the file, select Start/Run on the PC. Select Browse and find the directory where the file was saved. Click the file, select Open, then OK.
      note:
    Note that this file will create and extract into a default directory on the hard drive.
Installation of this firmware for the product may require assistance from Hewlett-Packard.
Preparing the product to receive the firmware update
  1. If possible, print all the reports from the control panel by performing the following steps:
      note:
    The product configuration settings, programmed speed dials and One Touch keys will be lost when the firmware is updated.
    1. Press ENTER/MENU.
    2. Use the < or >button to select Reports and press ENTER/MENU.
    3. Use the < or >button to select Print All and press ENTER/MENU. The product exits the Menu settings and prints the reports.
      note:
    The Configuration Report and Phonebook Report will show the product configuration settings, programmed Speed Dials, and One Touch Keys. These reports will be referenced for reconfiguring and programming the product after the new firmware update. If the control panel is blank, it may not be possible to print out these reports.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Press and hold the STOP/CLEAR key while plugging in the product. The LED on the control panel of the product should read: boot rom - 10/10/97 ready for download.
Preparing the computer to download the firmware update
Windows 95
  1. Before updating the firmware, save all work and quit any open programs.
  2. On the Start menu, click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box opens.
  3. Select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode? and click OK.
Windows 98
  1. Before updating the firmware, save all work and quit any open programs.
  2. On the Start menu, click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box opens.
  3. Select Restart in MS-DOS mode and click OK. The C:\Windows prompt appears.
Windows NT 4.0/2000
  1. If any other printer drivers are connected to the same LPT port as the product, set those other printer drivers to FILE. To check and change the drivers:
    1. On the Start menu, select Settings, then Printers.
    2. Right-click the HP LaserJet 3100 series product icon and select Properties.
    3. Click to open the Ports tab. Note which port the product is assigned to and click Cancel.
    4. Right-click the next printer and select Properties. Click the Ports tab and note the port that the second printer is assigned to.
    5. If the second printer is not using the same port as the HP LaserJet 3100 product, click Cancel and go to Step f or in the list of ports, click FILE, then click OK.
    6. Repeat Steps d and e for any other printer drivers.
  2. On the Windows desktop, right-click the HP JetStat icon in the system tray (usually the lower-right corner of the Windows screen) and select Exit HP JetStat.
  3. Press CTRL, ALT and DELETE. The Windows NT Security dialog box opens.
  4. Select Task Manager and click the Processes tab.
  5. Click JSFMAN .EXE and click End Process.
  6. If running HP Jetadmin v 3.0 or higher, close HPJETDSC.EXE by repeating Steps 3 through 5, replacing "JSFMAN.EXE" with "HPJETDSC.EXE".
  7. On the Start menu, click Programs, then Command Prompt. The c:\> prompt (DOS prompt) appears.
  8. Go to the "Downloading the firmware file from the computer to the product" section below.
Downloading the firmware file from the computer to the product
  1. From the DOS prompt, change to the directory where the firmware file named LEON121.ROM is saved. By default, the self-extracting utility saves the LEON121.ROM file to the following location: C:\lj164.
  2. If the default location was accepted in the self-extracting utility, at the DOS prompt, type cd c:\lj164 and press ENTER. The LEON121.ROM firmware file is located here. Type copy leon121.rom lpt1 /b and press ENTER.
      note:
    If the product is connected to a different port than LPT1, replace "lpt1" with the assigned port. For example, if the product were connected to the LPT2 port, then type copy leon121.rom lpt2 /b.
    The display on the product control panel says that it is downloading. When it finishes, the product should reset automatically.
  3. At the c:\> (DOS prompt) on the computer, type EXIT and press ENTER. The computer will return to Windows.
  4. Open the HP JetSuite Pro Software.
  5. Click the Configure icon, then click the Modify Device configuration icon.
  6. Enter the appropriate fax number and fax name, then click OK. The product should then receive the fax header information from the computer.
  7. At the product, print a Configuration Report from the control panel by performing the following steps:
    1. Press ENTER/MENU.
    2. Use the < or > button to select Reports and press ENTER/MENU.
    3. Use the < or > button to select Print Config Report and press ENTER/MENU. The product exits the Menu settings and prints the report.
  8. Verify that the new Firmware Version label under the System Information section of the Configuration Report is correct. It should read Firmware Version 1.21.
      note:
    Use the Configuration Report and Phonebook Report to reconfigure and program the product to the original user settings. These are the reports that were printed in the “Preparing the (product name)” instructions.
  9. For Windows NT 4.0 only: any printer drivers were changed to FILE when preparing the computer for download should now be changed back to the correct port setting.
