HP Color LaserJet and LaserJet Printers - How to Download and Install Printer Drivers in Windows XP for Network Connection

How to download and install printer drivers for a network connection
  note:
HP highly recommends printing this document for use as a reference. The instructions detailed in this document are generic in nature but will work for the majority of HP driver installations. For product specific software and driver installation instructions please check the documentation and or installation CD that shipped with your HP product. This "inbox" documentation will include product specific installation instructions for different connection types (for example, USB or network).
Installing a printer driver is a function of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. For additional information see Microsoft KB article 282842 titled How to install a printer driver locally for a remote printer in Windows XP. Click here to view the document. Some of the information in this document is also contained in the Microsoft KB article.
  1. To begin downloading, click the printer driver to download from the HP Web site. A prompt will appear to either run the program from its current location or to save it to disk. If selecting Save to Disk, proceed to Step 3. If selecting Run this Program from Its Current Location, proceed to Step 8.
  2. If downloading from Internet Explorer, proceed to Step 2a; if downloading from Netscape, proceed to Step 3b.
    1. Internet Explorer only: Select Save this Program to Disk, and click OK. Proceed to Step 3b.
    2. Another dialog box appears to save the file. Save this file in any folder. However, it is recommended to save it to the desktop so it can be easily found for installation.
      1. To save to the desktop, click the arrow of the box next to Save in (see the red box in Figure 1); the desktop icon is located at the top.
      2. Highlight Desktop and click.
      3. Proceed to Step 3c before clicking Save.
    3. Note the location (for example, desktop), and write it down along with the file name (see the green circle in Figure 1).

  3. Click Save. The printer driver will begin downloading.
      note:
A dialog box may appear that reads “Download Complete.” Click OK.
  4. Return to the Windows desktop.
      note:
All applications need to be closed, and all TSRs need to be shut down. TSRs include anti-virus software and other system status monitoring programs.
      note:
If the driver was saved to a location other than the desktop, open Windows Explorer, and locate the folder.
  5. Locate the icon of the downloaded printer driver (Figure 2); it will have the file name written down in Step 3c. Double-click the icon.
      note:
For some drivers the file may be a ZIP file. The following instructions are the same for files with either a .exe or .zip extension.

  6. A dialog box appears asking to accept the terms of the HP Software License. Click OK.

  8. A dialog box appears that shows that the files have been unzipped successfully. Click OK.
  9. Click Close on the WinZip dialog box (Figure 3).

  11. Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Next.
  12. Click Local printer, clear the Automatically detect and install check box, and then click Next.
  13. Click Create a new port, and then click Local Port in the Port type section.
  14. In the Port Name box, type the path to the printer in the following format, where server is the name of the print server and printer is the name of the printer: \\server\printer
  15. ClickNext to select the printer driver for your printer.
  16. When the dialog box appears that asks for the manufacturer of the printer (Figure 4). Click Have Disk.

  17. Click Browse (if a dialog box appears that reads, “A:\ is not accessible, the device is not ready,” click Cancel, and proceed to Step 15).
  18. Find the folder where the files unzipped in Step 8 (see the green circle in Figure 5). Double-click on the desired folder to open it. When the driver .inf filename appears in the File name text box, click OK or Open (depending on the system).
      note:
To find the folder, locate the letter of the drive where it was saved (for example, C), then locate the folder under that drive.

  19. The Locate File dialog box will reappear with the desired .inf filename in the text box. Click on OK.
