HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway v.2.10a - Discontinued, Information from the Readme

Discontinuance
HP has a strong commitment to provide support for Novell products. With this commitment in mind, HP has been providing the HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway for NDPS (HP Gateway) to enable printing on Novell networks. However, after careful testing and evaluation, HP believes that the Novell SNMP Printer Gateway (Novell Gateway) is the preferred solution for enabling printing on Novell networks. Therefore, the HP Gateway product has been discontinued as of January 1, 2005.
Customers are encouraged to migrate to the Novell Gateway as soon as possible. For information about migrating to the Novell Gateway, click here to go to the Novell support Web site. Search for NDPS Printer Agent Conversion Utility.
Information
Hewlett-Packard IP/IPX Printer Gateway version 2.10a June 26, 2000
Update summary
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) for NetWare 5.0, 5.1, 4.11, and 4.2 that allows you to enable printing, configure gateway settings, configure printers, and view statistics for HP printers connected through HP Jetdirect print servers in the Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS) and Novell Enterprise Print Services (NEPS) environments. Client printing is configured through Novell utilities. Although there are separate install utilities for NetWare 5.0/5.1/4.2 and 4.11, this Readme file applies to both. The install utility for NetWare 5.0, 5.1, and 4.2 (Ja142en.exe) puts certain files in the \Public\Win32 directory on the Sys volume. The install utility for NetWare 4.11 (JA141en.exe) puts certain files in the \Public\Win95 directory on the Sys volume.
Software/hardware requirements
HP Jetdirect Print Servers
Most HP Jetdirect Print Servers are supported by the HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway. However, some of these older print servers must be upgraded or replaced. IPX The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway requires HP Jetdirect firmware at x.03.06 or greater (where x is a placeholder dependent on the HP Jetdirect Print Server model). To find out the firmware version, print an HP Jetdirect configuration page. Information about whether or not the firmware of certain HP Jetdirect Print Servers is upgradeable to x.03.06 or greater is available at the HP Web site,
http://www.hp.com/go/cposupport; select Print Servers and Peripheral Sharing, and then select HP Jetdirect Print Servers/Firmware. The upgrade utility (HP Jetdirect Download Manager) is also available at this Web site. TCP/IP To print through TCP/IP, this protocol must be supported on the HP Jetdirect Print Server. Most of the HP Jetdirect Print Servers support TCP/IP, with the exception of the HP Jetdirect 150X (HP Product Number J2592) and some older single-protocol HP Jetdirect Print Servers. Print an HP Jetdirect configuration page to determine whether or not TCP/IP is supported on that device.

New features and fixes
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway 2.10a includes all of the HP Gateway 2.00u fixes plus the following:
  1. DNS (Domain Name System) is now supported. Printers can now be discovered and then installed using the DNS name or IP address.
  2. The HP Gateway-to-printer connection timeout is now an adjustable parameter (from the HP Gateway's Configuration page at the console). This parameter is used to define how long the HP Gateway will wait before closing the printjob connection. Typically, this parameter addresses older printers that may take longer to print. The default value is 50 seconds.
  3. A test page can now be printed from the HP Gateway's Configuration page at the console.
  4. The complete version now appears in the title area of the HP Gateway console screen.
  5. Print jobs can now be properly cancelled from the client workstation.
  6. Add support for Novell's latest Clients: Novell Client v3.21 for Windows 95/98 Novell Client v4.71 for Windows NT and Windows 2000 * This version of the HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway supersedes previous versions.
Previous versions
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway 2.00u includes all of the HP Gateway 2.00q fixes plus the following
  1. When printing via IPX/SPX, loss of print job data could result on very slow printers due to an HP Gateway-to-printer connection timeout being too low.
  2. If the printer went offline before a small print job (typically less than 50KB) completed, that job and subsequent small print jobs could be lost. The HP Gateway now insures a connection is secured to the printer before sending the print job.
  3. Add support for Novell's latest Clients: Novell Client v3.2 for Windows 95/98 Novell Client v4.7 for Windows NT
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway 2.00q includes all of the HP Gateway 2.00n fixes plus the following
  note:
This version was never officially released, but was distributed on an as-needed basis.
  1. Server not responding: KERNEL DETECTED PROCESS GOING TO SLEEP WHEN IT WAS NOT ALLOWED.
  2. Potential server abend when selecting F1 for Help within certain HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway screens on 4.11 or 4.2 NetWare servers.
  3. "Winsock Error" dialog box appears and can not be cleared when creating an NDPS printer within NWAdmin.
  4. Installing NDPS on a volume other than SYS would cause the HP Gateway to not be able to locate the resource directory.
  5. When printing via TCP/IP (NetWare 5 only), loss of print job data could result on very slow printers due to an HP Gateway-to-printer connection timeout being too low.
  6. When upgrading to NetWare Enterprise Print Services, some files were not copied because they were in use by the HP Gateway.
The HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway 2.00n includes the following
  1. High NetWare 5 server utilization.
  2. Long file names could cause the server to abend.
  3. Busy networks could cause large print jobs to restart.
  4. Jobs may be delayed for up to 2 minutes before being sent to the printer.
  5. I/O Error displayed in the NDPS Manager may not clear after I/O Error was cleared.
  6. Potential server abend when shutting down the NDPS Manager.
