HP 9G Calculator - Using the Keyboard

Many of the keys on the HP 9G calculator can perform more than one function. The labels associated with a key indicate the available functions, and the color of a label indicates how the function is selected.
Selecting the correct function
The following table gives the meaning of each label color.
Label color
Meaning
White
Just press the key.
Yellow
Press 2nd, and then the key.
Green
In Base-N mode, just press the key.
Blue
Press ALPHA, and then the key.
Using the 2nd and ALPHA functions
Second functions are the functions indicated by a yellow label above the key.
  1. Press the 2nd key.
  2. Press the key for the function.
When the 2nd key has been pressed, the 2nd indicator is displayed to indicate the next time a key is pressed it will select the second function of that key.
If the 2nd key is pressed by mistake, press 2nd again to remove the 2nd indicator from the display.
To lock the calculator in 2nd function mode (in order to enter several 2nd functions in a row):
  1. Press ALPHA.
  2. Press 2nd.
  3. To cancel this mode, press 2nd.
A blue label indicates ALPHA functions.
  1. Press ALPHA.
  2. Press the corresponding key.
When the ALPHA key has been pressed, the ALPHA indicator () is displayed to indicate the next time a key is pressed it will select the alphabetic function of that key.
If the ALPHA key is pressed by mistake, press ALPHA again to remove the ALPHA indicator from the display.
To lock the calculator in ALPHA function mode (in order to enter several alphabetic functions in a row):
  1. Press 2nd.
  2. Press ALPHA.
  3. To cancel this mode, press ALPHA.
Moving the cursor
Press the left or right arrow ( or ) to move the cursor to the left or right. Holding a cursor key will move the cursor quickly.
If there are entries or results not visible on the display, press the up or down arrow ( or ). When a previous entry is displayed on the entry line, it can be reused or edited. Up to 252 characters of previous inputs, values, and commands can be re-displayed.
To move the cursor to the beginning or end of the entry line, press ALPHA, then the left or right arrow ( or ). To move to the top or bottom of all the entries, press ALPHA, then the up or down arrow ( or ). The blinking cursor () indicates that the calculator is in insert mode.
Inserting and deleting characters
To insert a character, move the cursor to the appropriate position and enter the character. The character is inserted to the immediate left of the cursor.
To delete a character, press the left or right arrow ( or ) to move the cursor to that character, and then press DEL. (When the cursor is on a character, the character is underlined.) To undo a deletion, immediately press 2nd, then (on the ENTER key).
To clear all characters, press CL/ESC.
  note:
Previous input is not cleared when pressing CL/ESC, or when the power is turned off, but is cleared when changing modes.
  1. Arrow keys and ALPHA arrow keys for cursor movement control.
  2. Second key.
  3. ALPHA key.
  4. Four-function key:
    sin - press the key.
    sin -1 - press 2nd, then the key.
    D - in Base-N mode, press the key.
    H - Press ALPHA, then the key.
