## HP 30S, 38G, 39G, 39G+, 40G, 40gs, 48GII Series, and 49G series Calculators - Negative Result When Squaring a Negative Number in Algebraic Mode

Issue:
The calculator appears to display an incorrect answer when squaring a negative number using calculator in algebraic mode.
Solution
Because of the convention in the order of assessing operations, exponential expressions are evaluated before addition or subtraction. The squaring is done before the sign change.
If the term is enclosed in parentheses, then squared, the answer will be correct.
##### note:
Terms within parentheses are evaluated before exponential expressions.
Correct sequence
Here is the correct sequence for calculating the square of a negative number:
Key Operation ( use opening parenthesis +/- change the sign 3 enter number to square ) use closing parenthesis x^2 square it = complete the calculation
This will bring up the correct answer of a positive nine.
Explanation
When calculating the above problem without using parentheses, the answer given is negative nine. The table below explains why this incorrect answer appears. When entering the problem as +/-, 3 x^2, then = the calculator goes through these steps:
-3^2 This is on the display. 0-3^2 This is what the calculator sees. The zero is implied because subtraction requires two parts. 0-9 After 3 is squared. -9 The display after zero minus nine is evaluated.
