HP 39g, 39G+, 40g and 40gs Calculators - Notes and Sketches

Description
The calcualtor has text and picture editors for entering notes and sketches. Each APLET has its own independent NOTE view and SKETCH view. Notes and sketches that are created in these views are associated with the APLET. When the APLET is saved or sent to another calculator, the notes and sketches are saved or sent as well.
The notepad is a collection of notes independent of all APLETS. These notes can also be sent to another calculator via the NOTEPAD CATALOG.
Calculator symbol key
The procedures in this document use the following text to represent symbol keys:

APLET note view
With the 39/40g calculator, text can be attached to an APLET in its NOTE VIEW.
Writing a note in note view
To write a note in note view:
  1. In an APLET, press SHIFT, then NOTE to access the NOTE VIEW.
  2. Use the note editing keys shown in the table below.
  3. Set ALPHA-lock (A...Z) for quick entry of letters. For lower case ALPHA-lock press SHIFT, then A...Z
  4. While the ALPHA-lock is on:
    1. To type a single letter of the opposite case, press SHIFT, then the letter
    2. To type a single non-alpha character (such as 5 or [), press ALPHA first. (This turns off the ALPHA-lock for one character.)
        note:
      Notes are automatically saved. Press any view key (NUM, SYMB, PLOT, VIEWS) or HOME to exit the NOTES view.

APLET sketch view
Pictures can be attached to an APLET in its SKETCH view (SHIFT, then SKETCH). Sketches are automatically saved with the APLET. Press any other view key or HOME to exit the sketch view.
SKETCH keys
The following table contains a list of the SKETCH keys for the HP 39/40g graphing calculators.

Toggles menu key labels on and off. If menu key labels are hidden, pressing -] or any menu key redisplays the menu key labels.
Drawing a line
To draw a line:
  1. In an APLET, press SHIFT, then SKETCH for SKETCH view.
  2. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to the desired starting point of the line.
  3. To turn on LINE-DRAWING press LINE
  4. Move the cursor in any direction to the end point of the line by pressing the cursor keys.
  5. Press OK to finish the line.
Drawing a box
To draw a box:
  1. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to the desired starting point of the box.
  2. Press BOX. This turns on BOX-DRAWING.
  3. Move the cursor to mark the opposite corner for the box. The size of the box can be adjusted by moving the cursor.
  4. Press OK to finish the box.
Drawing a circle
To draw a circle:
  1. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to the desired starting point of the circle.
  2. Press CIRCL. This turns on CIRCLE-DRAWING.
  3. Move the cursor the distance of the radius of the circle.
  4. Press OK to draw the circle.
Draw keys
The following table contains a list of the DRAW keys for the calculator.

DOT+
DOT on. Turns pixels on as the cursor moves.
DOT-
DOT off. Turns pixels off as the cursor moves.
LINE
Draws a line from the cursor's starting position to the cursor's current position. Lines can be drawn at any angle by moving the cursor. Press OK to draw the line.
BOX
Draws a box from the cursor's starting position to the point at which OK is pressed.
CIRCL
Draws a circle with the cursor's starting position as the center. The radius is the distance between the cursor's starting point and the ending position. Press OK to draw the circle.
Labeling parts of a sketch
To label part of a sketch:
  1. Press TEXT and type the text in the edit line. To lock the ALPHA shift on, press A...Z. (for uppercase) or SHIFT, then A...Z (for lowercase). To make the label a smaller character size, turn off BIG before pressing A...Z (BIG is a toggle between small and large font size). The smaller character size cannot display lowercase letters.
  2. Press OK
  3. Position the label in the desired location by pressing the cursor keys.
  4. Press OK again to affix the label.
  5. Press DRAW to continue drawing, or press HOME to exit the SKETCH view.
Creating a set of sketches
A set of up to ten sketches can be created allowing simple animation. To create a set of sketches:
  1. After making a sketch, press NEWP to add a new, blank page. Now a new sketch, which will become part of the current set of sketches, can be made.
  2. To view the next sketch in an existing set press PAGE+cursor-down. Hold down PAGE+cursor-down for animation.
  3. To remove the current page in the current sketch series, press DEL
Storing sketches into a graphics variable
A portion of a sketch can be defined inside a box, and then that graphic can be stored into a graphics variable. To store a sketch in a graphics variable:
  1. In the SKETCH view, display the desired sketch that is to be copied (stored into a variable).
  2. Press STO+cursor-right
  3. Highlight the variable name that is to be used, and press OK
  4. Draw a box around the portion that is to be copied. Move the cursor to one corner and press OK, then move the cursor to the opposite corner and press OK
Importing a graphics variable
The contents of a graphics variable can be copied into the SKETCH view of an APLET. To import a graphics variable:
  1. Open the SKETCH view of the APLET (SHIFT, then SKETCH). The graphic will be copied here.
  2. Press VARS, HOME, then highlight GRAPHIC.
  3. Press the right-cursor and highlight the name of the variable (G1, etc.).
  4. Press VALUE, then press OK to recall the contents of the graphics variable.
  5. Move the box to where the graphics need to be copied, then press OK
The notepad
Subject to available memory, multiple notes can be stored in the NOTEPAD (SHIFT, then NOTEPAD). These notes are independent of any APLET. The NOTEPAD CATALOG lists the existing entries by name. It does not include notes that were created in APLETS' NOTE VIEWS, but these can be imported.
Creating a note in the NOTEPAD
To create a note in the notepad:
  1. Display the NOTEPAD CATALOG (SHIFT, then NOTEPAD)
  2. Create a new note by pressing the NEW menu key.
  3. Enter a name for the note.
  4. Write the note using the NOTE EDITING keys found at the beginning of this document.
  5. When finished, press HOME or an APLET key to exit the NOTEPAD. The work is automatically saved.
NOTEPAD CATALOG keys
The following table contains a list of the NOTEPAD CATALOG keys for the calculator.

Importing notes
Notes can be imported from the NOTEPAD into an APLET'S NOTES view and vice-versa. To import a note:
  1. In the function APLET display the NOTE view (SHIFT, then NOTE).
  2. Press VARS, HOME, then highlight NOTEPAD in the left-hand list.
  3. Highlight the name of the note that is to be used.
  4. Press VALUE, OK to copy the contents of the note to the function NOTE VIEW.
      note:
    To recall the name instead of the contents, press NAME instead of VALUE
Copying the note view from a current APLET into a note in NOTEPAD
To copy a note from a current APLET into a note in NOTEPAD:
  1. In the NOTEPAD (SHIFT, then NOTEPAD), open a note.
  2. Press VARS, APLET, and then highlight NOTE in the left column.
  3. Press the cursor-right key and highlight NOTETEXT ion the right column.
  4. Press VALUE, then OK to recall the contents of the NOTE VIEW into the NOTE.
