HP 38g Calculator - Notes and Sketches

Description
The HP 38g has compact text and picture editors for entering notes and sketches. The NOTEPAD is an independent collection of notes. Each aplet includes a NOTE view and a SKETCH view for that aplet only.
Calculator symbol key
The procedures in this document use the following text to represent symbol keys:

Note and sketch view
Text can be attached to an aplet in its note view (SHIFT, then NOTE), or pictures can be attached in the applet’s SKETCH view (SHIFT, then SKETCH).
Writing a note in NOTE view
To write a note in NOTE view:
  1. In an applet, press SHIFT, then NOTE to access the NOTE view.
  2. Use the NOTE editing keys shown in the table below.
  3. For quick entry of letters, set the Alpha-lock by pressing A...Z on the menu. For lowercase Alpha-lock press SHIFT, then A...Z on the menu. To type a single letter of the opposite case, press SHIFT, then the letter
      note:
    The notes entered in NOTE view are automatically saved. When finished, turn off the Alpha-lock by pressing A...Z on the menu.
Note and editing keys
The following table contains a list of the NOTE editing keys for the HP 38g graphing calculator.

Displays special characters. To type one, highlight it and press ECHO. Pressing OK copies the character and closes the CHARS screen
Importing a note
Notes can be imported from the NOTEPAD into an APLET'S NOTE view, and vice-versa. To import a note:
  1. Open the destination note in the NOTEPAD or NOTE view of an aplet.
  2. Press VAR
  3. If the source note is in the NOTEPAD: Press HOME, highlight the name of the source note in the left-hand list, then highlight the name of the source note in the right-hand list.
  4. If the source note is part of the current aplet, press APLET, highlight the NOTE in the left-hand list, then press cursor-left and highlight NOTETEXT in the right-hand list.
  5. To recall the contents of the source note into the destination note: Press VALUE, then OK
Drawing a sketch
To draw a sketch:
  1. In an APPLET press SHIFT, then SKETCH
  2. Press DRAW
  3. Use the cursor keys to move the crosshairs (graphics cursor).
  4. When finished drawing, press OK
      note:
    Sketches are automatically saved. Press any other view key or HOME to exit the SKETCH view.
Sketch keys
The following table contains a list of the sketch keys for the HP 38g graphing calculator:

Stores the specified portion of the current sketch to a graphics variable (G1 through G0)
NEWP
Adds a new, blank page to the current sketch set
cursor-up, then PAGE
Displays the previous sketch in the sketch set Animates if held down
PAGE, then cursor-down
Displays next sketch in the sketch set Animates if held down
TEXT
Opens the edit line to type a text label
DRAW
Displays the menu-key labels for drawing (below)
DEL
Deletes the current sketch
SHIFT, then CLEAR
Erases the entire sketch set

Turns off the menu-key labels. Press any menu key to restore them
Drawing a line
To draw a line:
  1. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to the desired starting point.
  2. Press LINE to turn on line drawing.
  3. Move the cursor in any direction to the end point for the line.
  4. Press OK to finish the line.
Drawing a box
To draw a box:
  1. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to the point where the corner of the box will begin.
  2. Press BOX to turn on box-drawing.
  3. Move the cursor to mark the opposite corner for the box.
  4. Press OK to finish the box.
      note:
    The size of the box can be adjusted by moving the cursor.
Drawing a circle
To draw a circle:
  1. In SKETCH view, press DRAW and move the cursor to where the center of the circle should be.
  2. Press CIRCL to turn on circle-drawing.
  3. Move the cursor the distance of the radius.
  4. Press OK to draw the circle.
Draw keys
The following table contains a list of the sketch keys for the HP 38g.

Dot on and off. Turns pixels on/ off as crosshairs move
DOT-

LINE
Draws a line from the cursor's starting position to the point at which OK is pressed. Lines can be drawn at any angle by moving the cursor
BOX
Draws a box from the cursor's starting position to the point at which OK is pressed
CIRCL
Draws a circle. The cursor's starting position is the center of the circle. The cursor's ending position (when OK is pressed) defines the radius
Labeling parts of a sketch
To label parts of a sketch:
  1. Press TEXT and type the text in the edit line. To lock the Alpha Shift press A...Z on the menu for upper case or SHIFT, then A...Z for lowercase.
  2. To make a label a smaller character size, turn off BIG (Pressing BIG toggles BIG on and off). The smaller character size cannot display lowercase letters.
  3. Press OK. Use the cursor keys to position the labels.
  4. Press OK again to affix the label.
  5. Press DRAW to continue drawing or press HOME to exit the SKETCH menu.
Creating a set of sketches
With the 38g, a sequence of up to ten sketches can be created. This allows for simple animation. To create a set of sketches:
  1. After making a sketch press NEWP to add a new blank page that will follow the current page. Now make a new sketch (the new sketch becomes part of the current set of sketches).
  2. To view the next sketch in the existing set, press PAGE, then cursor-down. Hold PAGE, then cursor-down for animation.
  3. To remove the current page in the current sketch series press DEL
