HP Jornada 560 Series PDA - Creating a Modem Connection to an ISP

Introduction
To connect to the Internet, you need an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Before you can use a modem to connect to an ISP or to dial in to a specific desktop PC, you must create a connection for that service on your HP Jornada. This document describes how to create a modem connection to an ISP.
  note:
Internet use requires separately purchased modem; connect time charges may apply. Some Web sites or Web content may be unavailable. Check with your service provider for availability in your area.
Before beginning
Before beginning, contact your ISP to get the following information:
  • Local dial-up access telephone number
  • User name and password
  • Primary and Secondary DNS numbers (Example: 204.127.160.2)
  • TCP/IP settings if the ISP does not dynamically assign IP addresses
Step 1: Installing the modem
Complete the following steps:
  1. Visit the HP Jornada 560 accessory page to verify modem compatibility with your product.
  2. Soft reset the HP Jornada with the modem removed.
  3. Install the modem using the manufacturers instructions.
Step 2: Creating the ISP connection
To create a modem connection to an ISP, complete the following steps:
  1. Tap Start, Settings, the Connections tab, and then the Connections icon.
  2. In the automatic Internet connection options, select Internet Settings from the drop-down menu, and then tap Modify.
  3. Tap the Modem tab and then tape New.
  4. Enter a name for the connection, such as “ISP Connection.”
  5. In the Select a modem list, select the currently installed modem from the drop down list.
  6. Tap Advanced and then tap the Name Servers tab. Select Use specific server address and enter the DNS (primary) and Alt DNS (secondary) provided by the ISP in the appropriate fields.
  7. If the ISP does provide a dynamically assigned IP address, just tap OK. If the ISP does not use a dynamically assigned IP address, tap the TCP/IP tab, then enter the address, and then tap OK to continue.
      note:
You should not need to change the TCP/IP settings. Most ISPs assign IP addresses dynamically.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Enter the access phone number and then tap Next.
  10. Select other desired options, and then tap Finish.
Step 3: Specifying local settings
These settings will apply to all connections made.
  1. Tap Start, Settings, and then the Connections tab.
  2. Tap the Connections icon and then the Dialing Locations tab.
  3. Verify that the local settings are correct.
  4. Tap Dialing Patterns and verify that the settings are correct. Tap OK.
  5. Tap OK again to close the Connections window.
Step 4: Opening the connection
To open the connection, open a program that requires a connection to the Internet. Your HP Jornada will attempt to connect automatically.
  note:
When the connection screen displays, complete the User name and Password with the appropriate information obtained from the ISP and leave the domain blank.
Once connected, you can:
  • Send and receive e-mail messages by using Inbox.
      note:
Before you can use Inbox, you must first set it up.
  • Visit Web and WAP pages using Microsoft (TM) Pocket Internet Explorer.
  • Send and receive instant messages with MSN Messenger (tap Start, Programs, and then the MSN Messenger icon). Before using MSN Messenger, you must first set it up.
Step 5: Closing the connection
If you opened the connection from a program, such as Inbox or Pocket Internet Explorer, close that program first. To disconnect, do one of the following:
  • When connected via a dial-up connection, tap the Connection icon (it looks like two arrows and is located to the right of the Start button) and then tap End.
  • When connected via cable or cradle, detach your device from the cable or cradle.
  • When connected via infrared, move the device away from the desktop PC.
