HP Jornada 560 Series Pocket PC and 928 Wireless Digital Assistant - Managing Memory

Managing memory
The HP Jornada 560 series pocket PC and 928 Wireless Digital Assistant use three kinds of memory:
  • Flash memory (ROM)
  • Storage and program memory (RAM)
  • Optional CompactFlash memory cards
Flash ROM
Flash ROM memory is non-volatile; that is, it will not be erased if the pocket PC loses power. The Flash ROM on the HP Jornada contains the operating system and pre-installed programs. In addition, a small amount of Flash ROM is available as storage. Flash ROM can be used to store the most important files, or as a location for the backup file.
Flash ROM memory appears as a folder named HP Safe Store in the My Device folder. Files stored in Flash ROM are not included when backing up files using ActiveSync or HP Jornada Backup.
Storage and program memory
The volatile RAM memory on the HP Jornada is allocated between storage memory and program memory. The operating system automatically manages the use of the program memory by closing the least recently used program to free up memory. If a message displays stating that storage or program memory is unavailable, increase program or storage memory.
Increasing storage memory
  • Buy and install an optional CompactFlash Type I or Type I Extended memory card, and move files from internal memory to the card.
  • Delete unnecessary files.
  • Remove Web pages stored for offline viewing in Internet Explorer folders.
      note:
Wireless Internet use requires separately purchased modem and service contract. Check with service provider for availability and coverage in your area. Not all web content available.
  • Uninstall programs you no longer use.
  • Clear program memory.
Increasing program memory
  • Use HP Jornada Task Switcher (see the Using HP Task Switcher to stop programs section below) or the Memory control panel (see the Using the memory control panel to stop programs section below) to close programs not currently being used. In most cases, programs automatically close to free needed memory. However, in some situations, such as when a dialog box is waiting for a response, the program may not be able to stop automatically.
  • Clear storage memory as described in the preceding section. This will free some storage memory so that it can be re-allocated as program memory.
  • Remove the HP Jornada from the cradle, remove the CompactFlash Card (if installed), and reset the HP Jornada.
      note:
All unsaved work is lost after resetting the device.
Using the memory control panel to stop programs
  1. Open the Memory control panel, and then tap the Running Programs tab to check the state of your active programs.
  2. To stop a running program, select a program in the list, and then tap Stop.
Using HP Task Switcher to stop programs
  1. Press and hold the Tasks hot key to display HP Task Switcher.
  2. On the pop-up menu, tap Close Window, and then tap a program in the list or tap Close All.
OR
  1. Tap the Start button and then Today.
  2. Tap the HP Task Switcher icon.
  3. On the pop-up menu, tap Close Window, and then tap a program in the list or tap Close All.
CompactFlash Memory Cards
CompactFlash memory cards are small, removable flash storage cards that enable you to expand the memory of the HP Jornada. Use CompactFlash memory cards for backup storage, archives, or to transfer large files to other devices. CompactFlash cards can be purchased from a variety of third-party vendors. The HP Jornada supports CompactFlash Type I or Type I Extended cards.
