HP Palmtop 620 and 660 or Jornada 680, 690, 720, 728, and 820 - Importance of Replacing the Backup Battery

Introduction
A low backup battery can cause Palmtop and Jornada devices to function abnormally; therefore, replacing the backup battery at least every 6 months is essential for the devices to function properly.
Abnormal symptoms caused by a low backup battery
If the backup battery is low, the device may function abnormally. The abnormalities may be related to the display, calibration, settings, sound, or other features. For example, the image on the screen will blink on and off or mix colors on the screen and/or the stylus may frequently need to be calibrated. Often the abnormality will occur with more frequency as the battery loses more power.
Devices with backup batteries
The following HP Palmtop and Jornada PCs have a CR2032 backup battery:
  • HP Palmtop 620lx
  • HP Palmtop 660lx
  • HP Jornada 680 and 680e
  • HP Jornada 690 and 690e
  • HP Jornada 720 and 728
  • HP Jornada 820 and 820e
Replacing the backup battery
  caution:
Before replacing the backup battery, the main battery should be charged or the device should be connected to AC power. Failure to do so could result in complete data loss on the device.
The backup battery should be replaced at least every six months, or sooner if the device runs frequently on low battery power. A backup battery on low power may cause all of the abnormalities described above. If the main battery completely loses power, or if the device is used when the main battery has little power, the backup battery can quickly lose power before six months. Replacing the battery will protect the data on the device and resolve the issues listed above if caused by a low backup battery.
If symptoms persist after replacing the battery and performing a soft reset, perform a hard reset because the data and settings may be corrupted to the point that a hard reset is necessary to refresh corrupted data.
Finding a replacement backup battery
The CR2032 battery is pretty common and is usually found wherever batteries are sold. In the US, these batteries typically sell for a couple of dollars in electronic stores, hardware stores, or grocery stores.
