HP Jornada 540 Series Pocket PCs - Problems Connecting to PC with USB

Introduction
The following information will help to establish a connection between a Jornada 540 series pocket PC and a desktop PC using the cradle or a USB cable. This document provides general troubleshooting tips for resolving common issues.
Solutions
Before attempting one or all of the following solutions, make sure that the operating system on the desktop PC supports USB. USB is currently supported under Microsoft (R) Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows 2000.
  note:
MS DOS (R), Windows 3.X, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 95 are NOT supported in USB.
  • Visit the document Resolving the message “Your Device Was not Detected” if the error message “Your device was not detected” displays on the PC.
  • Visit the document “Synchronization Cannot be Started” Error Message if the error message “Synchronization cannot be started” displays on the PC.
  • Ensure that the device is turned on.
  • If the desktop computer has more than one USB port, try a different port. On some PCs, switching from one port to the other makes a difference.
  • If a modem or Ethernet card is inserted into the device, remove it.
  • Ensure that there are no other active connections on the device by performing the following steps.
    1. Click Start then Today.
    2. Click the connection icon in the lower right corner of the screen (see Figures 1 and 2).
      Figure : Dial-up connection
      Figure : Direct connection
    3. Click Disconnect.
  • Ensure that the cable is securely plugged into the USB port on the back of the desktop PC. Use the cable that came with the device without extra cables or extenders attached.
  • Plug the other end of the cable securely into the correct port on the device. If using a cradle, push the device securely into the cradle.
      note:
If the operating system on the desktop PC does not support USB, the serial cable must be used to connect to the PC.
  • In ActiveSync click File, then Connection settings, and verify that Allow USB connection with this desktop is selected.
      note:
If the status is not shown as USB is available, it will be necessary to enable USB on the PC. For information on enabling USB, refer to documentation for the PC.
  • Reinstall ActiveSync by following the steps below.
    1. Remove the USB cable from the computer. The final step is to plug the cable back in. Do not reattach the cable until the process is complete.
    2. Click Start, then Run.
    3. In the Open field, type, msconfig.
      Figure : MSCONFIG
    4. Click OK.
    5. Click the Advanced tab.
    6. Click Enable Startup Menu.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click OK again.
    9. Restart the computer. The Startup menu will appear.
    10. Select Safe Mode by typing the number next to it and press ENTER to start the desktop PC in Safe Mode.
    11. Right-click My Computer.
    12. Select Properties.
    13. Click the Device Manager tab. (In Windows 2000, select the Hardware tab and then select Device Manager.)
    14. Check for Other Devices with a yellow question mark next to it. If there is not a device with a yellow question mark, skip to Step 17.
    15. Select the Other Devices with a yellow question mark next to it (see Figure 4) by clicking it, then click Remove.
      Figure : Device Manager
    16. Repeat this step for each line in the Device Manager with a yellow question mark next to it.
    17. Click OK. The Control Panel should display again.
    18. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    19. Highlight Microsoft ActiveSync.
    20. Click Add/Remove, and follow the prompts.
    21. Repeat Steps 2 through 6 above. At Step 6, click Enable Startup again to remove the check next to it.
    22. Click OK.
    23. Click OK again.
    24. Restart the computer. While restarting, it will detect the USB port and will automatically reinstall. Do not attach cable.
    25. Reinstall ActiveSync 3.1. See the Getting Started with Microsoft ActiveSync brochure for questions about reinstalling ActiveSync.
    26. When prompted to "Get Connected" after installing ActiveSync, attach the USB cable.
    27. Follow the prompts to get connected and synchronize.
  • Contact the desktop computer manufacturer if none of the above solutions resolve the issue. If USB devices do not connect to the desktop PC, an update may be available for the PC.
