HP Jornada 520 and 540 Series Pocket PC - Resetting the Jornada When It Appears "Frozen" or "Locked Up"

Introduction
Occasionally, a HP Jornada 520 or 540 series Pocket PC will need to be reset. For example, it may need to be reset after restoring data from the desktop PC or when the operating system stops responding. There are two methods of resetting:
  • Soft reset - A soft reset (also called “warm boot”) is similar to restarting the desktop PC. It restarts the operating system and preserves any saved data.
  • Hard reset - A hard reset (also called “factory default reset”) restores the HP Jornada to its original state, erasing everything added after it came out of the box. To ensure the safety of the information in case a factory default reset is necessary, regularly back-up data to the desktop PC (using Microsoft (R) ActiveSync) or to a CompactFlash or PC Card (using the HP Jornada backup application). For more information on backing up data, see the Backing up and restoring data section in the User's Guide.
      note:
When resetting, unsaved data in all open documents or programs is lost. Use HP task switcher to close all open documents and programs. (In the Today screen, tap the HP taskswitcher icon, then tap Close Window and Close All on the pop-up menu.)
Performing a soft reset
The soft reset is similar to restarting a desktop PC. All unsaved information is cleared from the device after completing the following steps.
  1. Disconnect the sync cable or remove the HP Jornada from the cradle.
  2. Remove the CompactFlash card (if installed).
  3. Use the stylus to briefly press the RESET button on the back of the HP Jornada, as shown in Figure 1.

Performing a hard reset
Perform a hard reset only when the HP Jornada does not respond to a soft reset.
  caution:
A hard reset will erase all data entered since the unit was purchased including all files, system settings, and programs you have installed.
The hard reset would be used to access the device if the primary and reminder passwords are forgotten. Performing a factory default reset erases all entered files, programs, and appointments. The only restorable data is data that has been backed up on a desktop PC or to a PC card or CompactFlash card. (For more information, see the Backing up and Restoring data section in the User's Guide.)
  1. Disconnect all cables attached to the HP Jornada, including the AC adapter.
  2. Use the tip of the stylus to press and hold the RESET button on the back of the HP Jornada.
  3. While holding the RESET button, press the ON/OFF button.
  4. Release the RESET button.
  5. Press the ON/OFF button again to restart the HP Jornada. The Welcome Wizard will display, and it will be necessary to re-establish a partnership with the desktop PC.
