HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs - Cannot Connect to the Internet Using Microsoft (R) Network

Issue:
You cannot connect to the Internet using Microsoft Network (MSN) and the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
Solution
The following procedure describes how to use the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC and Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer with a Microsoft Network account serving as the Internet service provider (ISP).
  note:
To use this procedure, you must have an existing MSN account. To create an MSN account, either run MSN Setup on a computer running Windows 95, or call MSN Support.
To use MSN as the Internet service provider, the following information is needed:
  • The User name (member ID) and password for the MSN account.
  • The local MSN phone (or access) number.
After obtaining this information, follow these steps:
  1. If using a PC card modem, insert it into the PC card slot of an HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
  2. Choose the Start button on the taskbar, tap Programs, and then double-tap the Communications folder.
  3. Double-click the Remote Networking icon, and then double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  4. Type a name for the MSN connection, choose Dial-Up Connection to select it, and then choose Next.
  5. Tap the name of the modem in the Select a modem box. You can also choose the Configure button to configure the baud rate for the modem.
  6. In the Telephone Number box, type the local MSN access number, then choose Finish.
  7. Double-click the icon for the new MSN Connection.
  8. In the User box, type the following line:
MSN/<the MSN user name> where <the MSN user name> is the MSN Member ID.
      note:
"MSN" must be entered in all uppercase letters.
  9. In the Password box, type the appropriate MSN account password.
  10. Leave the Domain box empty.
  11. Choose Connect.
      note:
Although you can use MSN as your ISP, you cannot receive MSN mail using the Windows CE Inbox. The Windows CE Inbox requires a POP3/SMTP mail server, but MSN currently uses a proprietary mail server and cannot be configured with the Windows CE Inbox. In addition, you cannot view MSN content using Windows CE or Pocket Internet Explorer.
