HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs - Disabling Charging on an AllPoints Radio Modem

ISSUE: When an AllPoints Radio Modem is inserted in the PC Card port of an HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC, the AA batteries on the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC are drained within 30 minutes.
SOLUTION: The most likely cause of this situation is that the AllPoints Radio Modem is charging its 9V battery by drawing power from the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC. The AllPoints factory defaults are set to enable charging, so every AllPoints user will experience this problem. The correction is simply to disable charging.
To disable charging in the AllPoints Radio Modem, follow the steps below:
  1. Turn off the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
  2. Insert the AllPoints Radio Modem into the PC Card slot.
  3. Turn on the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
  4. Tap the Start icon on the task bar.
  5. Tap Programs on the menu list.
  6. Double-tap the Communications icon.
  7. Double-tap the Terminal icon.
  8. Double-tap the Make a New Connection icon.
  9. The "Select a Modem" box displays the CIS information, and reads "Megahertz-AllPoints_Wir" if the modem is recognized.
  10. Type any number in the Telephone Number field.
  11. Tap Configure button to get to the Device Properties dialog.
  12. Check the "Manual Dial" box.
  13. Check the "Use terminal windows before dialing" box.
  14. Change the Connection Preferences to the following settings:
    Baud=9600
    Data Bits = 7
    Parity = Even
    Stop Bits = 1
    Flow Control = None.
  15. After all settings have been specified, tap OK, then tap OK again. The Communication session with the modem will then start.
  16. Type the word "MENU" into the terminal input screen.
  17. The modem will reply with a list of commands.
  18. Type "S."
  19. The modem will reply, "Set Maximum Charging Rate =."
  20. To disable charging, type "0" and press the ENTER key.
  21. To enable charging, enter a rate in milliAmps. The recommendation for the highest rate is 60, while moderate is 30.
  22. If charging is enabled, keep the AC adapter plugged in to avoid AA battery failure.
  23. After setting charging rate, type "Q" and press the ENTER key.
  24. The modem will reply, "The modem has been reset."
  25. Tap the menu bar item File, and then tap Close.
  26. After the Communication session is ended, turn off the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
  27. Remove the AllPoints modem.
  28. Reinsert the AllPoints modem.
  29. Turn on the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
  30. The modified modem configuration should now be operational.
