HP Digital Home Networking - Installing the HP Ethernet Network Interface Card (hn230e)

Before beginning
  1. Verify that all of the box contents are included.
  2. Remove the Ethernet Network Interface Card and CD-ROM from the box.
  3. If the computer is on, turn it and all peripherals off.
  4. Note how all cables are connected to the computer, then disconnect them.
Installing the Ethernet card
  1. Remove the computer’s cover (refer to the computer’s documentation for instructions).
  2. Locate the PCI slots (they are beige or white). If there is a faceplate covering the slot, remove it, saving the screw, if any.
  3. Firmly press the Ethernet card all the way into an empty PCI slot until it is snugly seated.
      note:
Be sure to install the card properly to avoid needing to reopen the computer later.
  4. If a screw was removed from a PCI slot faceplate, screw it into the corresponding end of the Ethernet card faceplate.
  5. Reinstall the cover on the computer.
  6. Reconnect the cables to the computer as noted in Step 4 of “Before beginning”.
  7. Network the computer by connecting one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the Ethernet card and the other end to a gateway, switch, hub, router, or modem.
Installing the driver
  1. Turn on the computer and insert the driver CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of the computer.
      note:
The driver can be downloaded, if necessary, from HP's Web site.
  2. The computer operating system automatically recognizes the new Ethernet card and launches the New Hardware Wizard. Click Next.
  3. Accept the default selection, search for a better driver (the wording varies among Microsoft Windows operating systems). Then click Next.
  4. If a window that reads, “Windows will search for a new driver in its driver database…,” is seen, click the CD-ROM drive box and then click Next.
  5. The computer operating system automatically finds and installs the correct driver. Once a successful installation is reported, click Finish.
  6. If the wizard asks for permission to restart the computer, click Yes. If the wizard does not appear, restart the computer.
Troubleshooting
When restarting the computer after installing the Ethernet card, if Windows does not detect the card and launch the New Hardware Wizard, try the following:
  • Verify that the card has been inserted securely in the PCI slot.
  • Try inserting the card into a different PCI slot.
